Chirping when downshifting...

My 4runner has started chirping when downshifting or when coasting. It seems that when it is in gear, and the engine is not powering the wheels, it chirps and vibrates.

My guess is the driveshaft, but I'm not sure...

Any other ideas?

Also, if it is the drive shaft, is there any difference between an auto driveshaft and a manual driveshaft? Because I have access to a used driveshaft that came from the same year, but an automatic.

Thanks!

Before my driveshaft fell off (it was at low speed - I didn't die), I noticed a chirping too. However, mine happened when I was in gear and on the gas....the moment I lifted off the gas while still in gear, the chirp happened.

I was driving to my mechanic to have it looked at when the shaft fell off 2 blocks from his shop.

Check your u joints, your yoke connections (to rear diff and transfer case)

Could also be a problem with the transmission, likely the syncros. The original transmission was bad on mine when I bought it and it made very different noises when accelerating and slowing down.

If you need a new drive shaft, I have both front a rear in my garage ;):
