Dang it!! If I hadn't just bought steering parts I'd have the money for these!! I've been looking for longtubes for this engine for months now.
 
He probably never installed them because they'd never pass California smog with shiny headers glowing from the engine bay :P
 
Not in stringent California. Almost every type of header is "49-state legal", meaning every state except California lol. They have to have it approved by the CARB board and have a fancy EO number otherwise it'll fail smog every time. Unless of course your technician is half-asleep or you get it "smogged" at that one guy's place...

Doug thorley headers are California legal although you have to find a smog guy that isn't an incompetent dip shit to get it to pass. Ask me how I know. I thought TRD headers were legal too though.

Doug Thorley ones are the only ones I know of.

EDIT: I just checked the CARB list again by Manufacturer, and TRD headers are CARB legal! I searched the first time by EO # and it didn't show up, weird.

You'll still need the CARB sticker or a print-out to bring to a smog station, they will not pass it until they see that. Honestly though, there's better things to spend your money and time on than headers, they don't do much for a stock 3.4L engine. $500 can go a long way for something else!

That's kinda my thoughts. I don't know the numbers, but I suspect that Toyota did a good job designing the stock headers for the stock engine... unless someone can tell me otherwise? :)

Also, nothing that shiny belongs on my 4Runner.

Not to mention headers are ridiculously hard to put on!
 
TRD headers are made by Doug Thorley... just little FYI

and no the stock exhaust manifolds are not any where near as good as a set of headers. they are restrictive, and not smooth flowing like headers are. and no they are not that much of a PITA to put on as everybody makes them out to be, just have to know what your doing
 
I just put Doug thorley headers in my truck and it was a PITA. These look even harder. Looks like there is a flange that meets behind the block on top of the transmission! :scared:

Wish they still made this design. Long tubs have proven over and over to be superior to short tubes which is all doug thorley has these days.
