Cleaning out blower motor?

Howdy guys,

I just acquired a '98 V6 SR5 w/ 257k, and it's got a ticking, rattling noise, consistent with the A/C fan speed. A/C blows colder than a dead Eskimo hooker, but that noise is ANNOYING!!

It sounds like it's coming from right behind the glove box / pass. air bag area.

I've never torn into a Toyota before; whats the easiest way to get into the blower or the ducts in that area? I'm thinking there might be leaves or other gunk hitting the blower as it spins around.

I've also read on here that people are washing down the coils to de-stink them; can these also be accessed once the blower is off?

The blower motor is right behind the glovebox, so you're on the right track. I believe the motor will just drop straight down after you remove a few screws and disconnect the wiring harness. You may need to remove the glovebox door, but I'm not positive about that.

Yeah you can remove 3 screws and drop the blower fan and motor out. No need to remove the glove box. If you need more room you can remove the passenger threshold which will let you pull out the kick panel. I don't know about the coils though.

Not too much trouble - basically some screws and a bit of jiggling not to force it. Behind the plastic is the evaporator and I'll bet that acorn you'll find it coated with dust. I had it washed the same time as re-filling the A/C gas, and it looks like you need to release the A/C pressure and disconnect at the firewall so it's best left when you need to top up your A/C gas.
