clicking..???

yesterday i went sand riding with one of my friends with a 00 4runner. the first 10 min of wheeling we were having a good time with no problems. then out of no where my friends runner starting having a clicking sound from his front left wheel area, the clicking sound would speed up when he would give gas, it would click more with his rpms.
-it happened when he was in 4wd,
-didnt click for the firs 10 min of driving in 4wd,
then it started making noise, he said it would climb with his rpm.

we did a quick check of his axels up front. they seemed normal.
but after a 30min drive cross the beach it would start clicking again.

a friend with us said it could have somthing to do with his hub/ where the axel connects to it.?

has anyone had this happen before?

i told him i could ask around on this forum before he takes it to a shop.

it doesnt do this in 2wd, only after about 1o min in 4wd drivingon sand.
we even drove it on the road in 4wd but the sound never did re-occour..?

its either the hub or axel right?

just a lil confused because i never heard it happen to anyone else..

and for the record this guy babys his runner...??/?

and with the wheel turned all the way (left/right) there's no popping noise or anything un normal ...

so we went on the sand for a drive again, and sure enough , after about 15 min of normal driving on the sand in 4wd the clicking returns.....and as were driving off the beach we smell some strange burning smell. so we park it off the beach on a dirt road and there was a little bit of smoke coming from his driver side wheel area ( said midas changed pads and rotors 2 months ago so it cant be break related...

Check your CV axles/boots. The CV boots are those rubber things right by the tire, the black rubber with lots of "rings" or something, where the wheel/axle turns... If your CV axles go bad and get dirt/grime in there, you'll get clicking, especially in 4WD.

the boots seemed fine, no grease leaking out, said it was never replaced before
