Clutch sound

Yeah it spins fine. Like I said it has all new bearings. Makes the sound in all gears except 4th. When I had the transmission out of the cases I put it in all gears and spun it and it was perfectly smooth.

You have an issue straight through then. I wasn't sure if you were inside the transmission or not. To me, this is extremely odd. Let's see if [MENTION=8262]badluck[/MENTION] has any ideas. He is very busy at the moment, though. So, he.may not have time to respond..

I am thinking of an output shaft pilot roller bearing or the rear bearing in the input shaft. However, I am guessing. Being you replaced the pilot, it's definitely internal at this point.

I appreciate the time and thought you put in to all of these posts. Since all of the internal bearings have been replaced I’m beginning to think something else is wearing… from the research I’ve done, I found that the “bearing retainer” on the inside can sometimes experience wear causing the main shaft to come out of alignment which results in poor shifting performance… doesn’t say anything about noise tho. I think there’s also 2 more sets of needle bearings under the gears that didn’t come with the kit. Those could be wearing and causing the noise but you would think that if they knew that was a common failure point they would be included in the rebuild kit. I’m trying to gather as much info as possible before I tear into it again because I really want this to be the last time.

I am sorry i cant be more help. I just never had any issues with 5 speed Toyotas. The 1983 5 speed that i did have issues with I had the rear bearing replaced but the entire transmission was full of shavings. I just replace it due to the damage that was severe with a used one that was good. My 2 manual 4 runner 5 speeds so far are solid.

Only a handful of people will open them up a manual transmission so I am glad you are one that will. As a guess, I would agree that its a part that was not replaced is causing the issue or something is out of spec.


I am just curious how many miles in on this 5 speed transmission? Maybe you stated and i missed it if so i apologize.

No worries. I will get to the bottom of it. It has 143,000 miles total. 140,000 in the original car and 3,000 in my car. I have some pictures from when I opened it I’ll post them when I get back home

Hmm.. I have many manuals since the early 90s. I haven't had any transmission issues and the 2 have now has 220k and my other is 120K.

Oh.. Yours is a transplant. That really shouldn't matter I am really surprised you are having any issues with that low of miles. I was thinking more like 300 to 500 k miles.

Mostly you keep the gear grease clean mostly these transmissions out last the rigs. Interesting indeed.

Here's a,thought....since ur saying there's no noise in 4th gear, to me this is clue that possibly it could be an issue with the counter shaft. When u r in 4th gear I don't think there's a load on the counter gear like there would be in the other gears. Maybe google that symptom and see if that sheds any light into the situation. I have worked on American truck transmissions and tcases but haven't had to do any work on my 4runner 5speed with over 300k. I did have a similar situation on a tcase once where I replaced all the bearings and it still had a rolling knocking noise. The problem turned out to be that the ID of the gear that rode on roller bearings was worn. Once I replaced that gear, my noise went away. I also wouldn't rule out a worn part but unless u have the tools and specs/wear limits, that would be hard to figure out.

I also assumed u used good quality bearings and they were identical to the ones u replaced.

What were the bearings u mentioned that didn't come with the rebuild kit?

To me it sounds like a bearing noise as well.

Yeah I’m not sure of the maintenance the previous owner did on it. I know the car sat for about 4 years before I bought it and swapped the transmission into my car. But the donor car sat at 140,000 miles when I took it out. I barely drove the car so I can’t remember if it was making that sound in its original car before it went into my car… I think it was. The oil that I drained out was not bad at all though.

I bought the kit off of cobra transmission. Here is the link to the exact kit I got:

I think they’re good quality? They were Nachi.

The ones that weren’t included were the ones that sit on the main shaft under the gears. They’re like needle bearings. Or atleast that’s how I would describe how they look

Yes you have quite a bit of metal paste in there... definitely something heavily warn in there. Did you check everything when you have it apart? The FSM has what to check and verify in its manual Transmission section.

Plus your piolet bearing looks like it was seized or wrong size on the end of the shaft at some point. That doesn't look correct at all. See how shiny it is. Like the inner race was sliding on that main shaft.

That’s what I noticed as well. Since I’m having the symptom of whining in all gears except 4th, I googled that in relationship to Toyota transmissions and unfortunately most of the forums I read stated that there was wear on the countershaft gears causing the whine. If that’s the case, most of the people were just suggesting that I should buy a new transmission:/ most of the people with that similar issue stated that their transmission blew up shortly after experiencing that kind of noise…
