Coast Guard C-130 Crash

A Coast Guard C-130 and a Marine AH-1 Cobra helicopter colided off the Coast of California near San Clemente Island Thursday night. The 7 crew members of the C-130 and the 2 crew members of the Cobra are feared dead. As a prior Coast Guard C-130 crew member, this hits especially close to home. My thoughts and prayers are with the crew and their families.

Seems odd that none of the three other helicopters flying in formation with the Cobra hung around to see if there were survivors? Maybe they did and the article just didn't explain it properly.

Even if the other helos spotted survivors, they would most likely not be equipped for a water borne rescue. The best thing to do would be to radio precise coordinates and clear the air space. Accidents are the worst types of military fatalities imo. What a tragedy

Agree they wouldn't be equipped for water borne rescue, but they were equipped with night vision equipment. There is a big difference between radioing the co-ordinates of the initial impact and then leaving vs. staying on station as the wreckage, and any survivors drift away from the point of impact. By the time other help gets on the scene any survivors would have already moved out of the area making the job of any rescue just that much more difficult. I still suspect that at least one of them must have stayed until others showed.

True, I think a holding pattern for one of the aircraft would be a good idea provided fuel wasn't an issue. The article does make it seem as though the other aircraft more or less abandoned the scene
