Coastal Offroad Front Bumper Question/Issue

Hello T4R world.

I'm wondering if any of you have used the Coastal Offroad kit for your front bumper. My buddy and I started welding up mine, and we ran into issues that we were hoping didn't require extensive modification. I'm also hoping Coastal will chime in here, as I've tried unsuccessfully to get them by email a couple of times, and I'd like to get this bumper done! This post is a bit of copy/paste/hack from that email. I am unable to embed photos for some reason. If anybody has tips to make that work, that'd be great!

Let me first just say that I'm impressed with the kit so far. The pieces up to this point have fit together great with no modifications, only grinding bevels where recommended. My 12k-lb winch should fit pretty easily with some tubing reroutes. I just need to know if I'm doing it wrong and how to fix it if so. Now let's get on with it:

This is on an '03 Sport with the gray flares/molding. The issue I'm having mainly deals with the top "wings" of the bumper, that go out from the center winch area over to the fender flare. It seems to us like the wing tops are far too wide. If we bring them toward the middle of the vehicle to narrow it up, as shown below, it throws off all the angles, and brings the top bar too close to the fender.

Even pulled in toward the middle, it still sticks out a bit too far, but it's at the max inboard position because at that point it's hitting the under part of the fender (facing out but not visible when a bumper is present). Does it seem like the wings are cut correctly, or rather like they're for a different trim level, or perhaps we're doing it wrong?

Modifying this wing top piece would then require modification to every other piece that goes below it (defeating the purpose of the kit for me). I'm excited to get this finished, and any help is appreciated! Thanks, T4R!

Thats the design of the bumper as far as I know. Mine is just like that. You'll have probably 1.5" of bumper wing past your fenders.

I saw 1 or two cars that seemed to have this more flush with thr fender but I am willing to bet it was modified that way.

Works out nice down the road for when you want to get wider fenders

The rear bumper is the same way, I have about 1.5" of hangout on the top wing plates from the fender flare.

My 2nd gen Coastal bumper looks just like that also. Thinking it’s the design. There is Enough wing room in mine to mount CB antenna easily. Build it, paint it and love it. It’s badass when it’s done.

I'm not 100% if this is the reasoning, but 06-09 flares are wider than the 03-05 flares, probably like +0.5-1" on either side. So making this section wider probably accounts for that difference. Also keeps you from bending up the fenders or headlights if you were to accidentally get bonked by a tree or rock at an angle

Thank you, everyone, for the replies! I can definitely see the advantages to the added width, but it wasn't what I had in mind.

I'm realizing now there may have been a communication breakdown, where I misunderstood the reply to my initial inquiry to Coastal regarding the bumper. I thought the word "option" meant there were multiple options. It's not the first time I've been confused by something, and it won't be the last. Words are hard...

Little late to the game if you're forging ahead...

I have one and the "wings" stick out 3/4-1 inch, I have an 07 though which has the wider flares.

Looking at your pic, looks like bumping the whole top plate in is gonna put your bars really close to the fender (see red highlight), when it flexes, it'll rub (assuming you're going off road with this thing)

Think I'd trim the ends (blue highlight) so you would have less pieces to fit. It would still take cutting a few (4 total?), but at least it would be straight cuts.

Also, if you're putting tubes on, DEFINITELY extend them through to the bottom plate and weld! I didn't and had a LOT of flex on any road irregularities. I wound up pulling the bumper and adding pieces at that spot, I also added a few other braces inside and it made all the difference.

I was not happy when pulling, welding and repainting it!!! But it was my own dumb fault for rushing initially.

As everyone has said, designed that way for if you run the headlight tubes. Eventually, I plan on chopping off the extra possibly and welding in a new outer plate to bring them in tighter to the flares.

Don't forget, you also need to adjust for the smile, as I call it, that the 4th gen 4Runners have. I used a spare 2x4 chuck of steel and my floor jack.
