COld winter weather issues????

I notice at -0 temps when first starting my 2015 SE Trail that it'll make this "hrrrrrrrr" sound. Although, I've noticed it in my previous 2012 and 2005 though too. It doesn't last long but it's long and loud enough to notice.


It's just her way of saying :smow: it's fargin cold!


After that, no issues. Runs like a dream. HOWEVER in those subzero temps, I would like there to be NO ice developing on the inside of the windows. Even when I have the defrost on full blast. It was -16 here in Colorado last Saturday and ice was creeping onto the inside of the driver, passenger and upper windshield near the rear view mirror area. Nothing major but all things considered, it was noticeable.
 
When I work night shift and my truck sits outside in the 30's or below, I have been noticing kind of a drone/whine (kind of a whirring sound) that is somewhat rotational when I leave work, and if I do nothing it won't go away even as it warms up and multiple starts/stops of the engine. It's odd cos when if I transfer to 4wd, the sound goes away, and will usually stay away when I go back to 2wd. '16 TEP w/ KDSS, 12k miles. Plan on taking it in when I get a chance.
 
Well as old as mine is, 97' and at 393,000kms and -26c this morning, she started right up same as she does in the summer, no unusual noises at all ! and we drove off into the coldness. Guess they don't make them like they used to eh !
Honestly, the only cold weather winter issues I have had in the 4 years I have my 4rnr are like others with the rear tailgate supports not wanting to stay up and my doors freezing up despite spraying wd40 on the door seal !

My 2013 Outback makes more squeals and noises on cold start ups !

Get a 3rd gen ! Old School all the way.
 
I have the stock roof rails. After a big snow storm the snow accumulates on the roof and eventually begins to melt. Well the space between the rails and roof is so small that the now ice chunks just keep sliding back and forth on the roof and never come off. Stop...slosh clunk....go slosh clunk...turn...slosh clunk.

i got scratches from this last winter from whatever crud was in the ice

acorns do the same thing in the fall, although i haven't noticed scratches from them
 
Was just in Canada with -15F to -20F morning starts: turned over a little more slowly but started up each time. No issues other than the rear gate struts wimping out (also have a rear ladder which adds weight). Like others mentioned, I hear the "hurrrrr" sound when it starts cold, but it goes away quickly. Also takes a little more effort to steer at low speed until things warm up.

I've experienced that hard shifting as well. What has helped is a combination of letting off the gas pedal slightly (under 40) and instead of shifting straight down I tilt the lever to the right slightly then pull down. Not sure if you have the lever or the knob.

I try to stay out of cook county as much as possible. I am in the north and west burbs.
 
I have had no problems on my '15 LTD and last few days have used the auto 4x4 - can feel no lag at all. Was a little concerned about lag as others have mentioned.

-20 is cold but -40 is a hell of a lot colder and absolutely brutal on machinery - all sorts of noises appear at -40 along with flat spots on tires and a seat that feels like a rock. I have a company '00 Silverado with 120k on it - when about minus 20 and less, the throw-out bearing squeals like a banshee - has been doing this for 14 years and continues to work fine.
 
The only cold weather issue I have is that when the temperature drops under zero degrees the passenger windshield wiper tends to freeze up in spots and not clear the windshield. It's mostly just annoying... however once the temperature is back in the teens it goes away.

wind chill temp effects people not machinery.

the actual air temp is the factor not wind chill temp.

the other day the wind was blowing 50MPH wind chill was -25deg f ,, air temp was 15 deg f no problem with 15 F on these vehicles but -40 deg f air temp that will cause issues ...
 
No problems in NY. 20s at night and a balmy 43 during the day. Hell I might even be able to take the motorcycle out this week.
 
Cold weather

Temps fell down to -10 to -12F for a week, very unusual for this area, but the 4R Trail gave us no problems at all. Looks like we'll hit a mpre normal 40 today and it sure is a welcome change. I've lived in Ontario, Connecticut, Maine and Washington State, even spent a winter in Fort Churchill on Hudson's Bay while in the army, and I must say I much prefer the Pacific Northwest in my old age. Ted
