Hey all,

Now that I have a somewhat proper 4x4 and the fact that it comes with fast-wearing stock tires, i am just doing some reading on tires.

For me, i think BFG AT KO2 is overkill. I will spend 90% (if not more) on highway...so, i need something comfy and quiet. I may do some off-roading, but NOT hardcore...mild stuff.

So, i have been reading about these tires: TerrainContact A/T - 265/60R18 110T Tire | Continental

Anyone here have them? Good/bad??

Yup, this was the last set of tires on my Outback, it was used as DD with KO2s used on strong but lightweight wheels for trips.

The Conti AT performed like a really good street tire on road. They are also optimized for rain, which might matter to you.

On dirt, they tracked super nicely. I only put 100 dirt miles on them before selling the car.

The issue I had with the Conti AT may or may not be entirely subjective: it is comfort. Long story short, it should be fine on the 4R given the sidewall size.

It is without a doubt a very, very good tire for paved and dirt roads.

The issue would be puncture resistance. I got a tire replaced after 50-100 miles from picking a box cutter around town. I really don't think that a box cutter can get through the tread blocks of a KO2 or my P-metric Wildpeaks. I may be wrong, but a blade that thin should not be able to get through the tread blocks without breaking.

Indeed, the Conti AT is not even advertised for rocks.

Considering that I have had absolutely no complaints with the Wildpeak on road, I would just go with the same P metric Wildpeaks even if I were not in rocks of some sort all the time. But I don't know if the Wildpeaks are as good in the rain as the Conti AT.

In terms of wear, the KO2 did the same as the Wildpeaks with equal offroad %, maybe marginally better. The Conti's first 1/32 went down disappointingly fast for a set that saw 4,000 miles with just a paltry 100 of dirt (as that is what the KO2s were for).

If you spend 90% of the time on road, I'd argue that you should still stick to an H/T tire. Michelin LTX M/S. If you really want an all terrain they have an LTX A/T. The Continental is still too new for my tastes, but I have had good luck with them and other brand General Tire.

Yeah, i am looking at Defender LTX M/S. LTX AT does not come in my stock size...and i have had them before...not impress by them.

Fair enough. Many recommend the Cooper AT3 but I have them and am not satisfied with wet weather performance at all. Bridgestone Dueler Revo was popular, not sure about the latest generation but I would look into them.

Only slightly. I'm wondering why in some tests they use steel rims vs alloys. Could skew some data. Their tire survey is pretty good for the Conti, but there are significantly less miles reported. With that said I trust the Contis. Had better luck getting that brand balanced as well compared to Coopers and Bridgestones. Personally, I'd still rather get the LTX M/S. An all terrain sacrifices too much when you drive 90% highway. They will handle the 10% of off roading you do.

Yeah, that is why i am probably going to get Michelin Defender LTX. But the Conti’s look better! :D
 
I have close to 7K on my Contis and I really like them. My other 4R has Nitto G2s and they are noticeably louder than my Contis.

With the recent snow falls in SouthWest PA I have zero issues. They also track extremely well in water at highway speeds.

The only issue I had was getting them balanced correctly. I had to request to get them roadforce balanced after the shop initially didn't use that and I had a slight vibe at 60-65MPH. Since getting them roadforced balanced they are excellent.

I've had G2, KO2s on my 4Runners and these are my favorite.
 
I have a bias against highway/minivan tires. I live in California and spend 98% on freeway/in town stop go traffic and I took off my highway tires as soon as I could! No regrets.

If you wanted the smoothest ride and still look a bit aggressive and have decent confidence in snow/rain/off-road maybe some Yokohama G015, or or cooper AT3 4S was originally a tire I was looking into then I decide to go a little more at/Rt hybrid instead what I have now.

You mean 1% :)

Still, the Conti AT would be perfect for those 99% as it sacrifices absolutely nothing on road. Gotta be P-metric for that, of course. It is a very recent design and it shows.

Not to mention, % of unpaved miles per se means little, it is all about the terrain, not the mileage. The Conti AT would do great in sand and dirt.

On par with the Michelins... That's where personal accounts step in. I'd have a hard time choosing them over the Michelins if they cost the same. Plus they have a longer tread life. But, I do like what I'm reading so far about these Continentals. I may just order a set out of impulse anyway :doh:
 
In my stock size, the Michelin Defender tire is 0.3” taller in diameter but is 1.2 lbs lighter. Michelin has 10,000 miles more warranty, but Conti TC has 3 years of roadside assistance (including 1 year for any badness that happens to the tire).

Tough choice!
