Hello everyone, I am one of your newest members. A little over a week ago, I picked up my brand new 2010 Toyota 4Runner SR5 in Classic Silver with the Premium Leather package. This is quite an event for me because while I have always admired the 4Runners, I have exclusively owned a Jeep since about 1991. I had a brand new 1991 Jeep Cherokee that I absolutely loved that was taken off my hands, when it was only 2 years old, by some nice people in Philadelphia one night. All I found was a pile of broken glass. Since I was living in the city at the time, I decided it was best to not replace it with something with a high theft rate, so I bought used 1985 Jeep Renegade. It served me well for about 4 years, but I spent more time working on it and fixing it than I would like to remember. One day when I had it towed home, my wife told me if I got it started, the only place I was driving it was to the dealership. This is what we did and traded it in on a brand new 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Grand Cherokee has been a great vehicle and in my opinion, the last good year for them. I have over 160,000 miles on it, eat brakes and in the last year I had to have the rear diff rebuilt and replaced the cooling system, but otherwise it’s been fairly solid on major components. However, it’s old and time to be retired, hence the new 4Runner. That said, the old Jeep isn’t going away, just being relegated to a hauler and surf fishing vehicle (I can’t bare to drive a brand new vehicle on the beach!)
We’re not fans for Ford or GM, Chrysler was out of the question. While I really like Honda products (we have an Acura TLS), the Pilot just didn’t meet my towing and off road needs. That really left us with Nissan or Toyota. We test drove a Pathfinder, but finally decided to pass on Nissan. We were actually torn between a 4Runner and a Sequoia (though we needed the extra room), but finally decided that we really wouldn’t take advantage of that room more than a couple time a year, so we couldn’t justify the cost. So that’s how we ended up with a 4Runner.
I have already gotten some good information from the forum, like how to find running boards. I have a set on order from Sparks Toyota along with a cargo cover and some cargo nets. Next up are some floor mats (Husky or Weathertech, not sure which ones just yet), a set of Thule cross bars and mud flaps when they come available.
Looking forward to many good years with my 4Runner and sharing them on this board!
