Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S

Snow update:
Got our first dusting of the white stuff + a tad of ice. The tires in 2wd don't trip traction control as much, and the few times it did, it took more snow/ice than with my older tires to do it. I can accelerate from a dead stop and not have to worry about bogging down with traction control while it tries to find grip. Much more confidence inspiring.

Awaiting the heavy white stuff to play with 4Hi.

Still very quiet on the roadway, no abnormal wear.

Thanks for the update. I'm thinking about picking up some AT3 4S's to run year round here in NE. I've always run dedicated snow tires on my vehicles, but think/hope this tire will be sufficient since I'm not travelling on snowy mountain roads/passes as much as I did growing up in Montana. Just general commuting on plowed/salted highways, and weekend trips skiing on pretty much the same types of roads. Would be nice to not have to store an extra set of wheels/tires in my apartment also...

Well there I decided to pull the trigger on the AT3 4S's. Got them on a black Friday sale for $140 a pop, 265/65-18. I am using them as a 4-season replacement for the 265/60-18 Michelin Latitude Tour HP's that were on my runner when I purchased it.


Had them on the rig for two days now and here are my initial impressions:

City Driving - seem to handle as well as the Michelin's in the current dry road conditions. Haven’t noticed any additional float or roll from the tires. They due transmit minor road surface imperfections into the car more than the Michelin's, however I find it actually nice to feel more "connection" to the road surface.

Highway Driving - no perceived noise increase, in fact they may actually be quieter than the Michelin's. Same issue (or non-issue) regarding the transmittance of road imperfections. It's not enough to be annoying, you just feel bumps/expansion joints etc. a bit more.

Snow Driving - I was able to test them on a snowy road today when I went out backcountry skiing. It is a gravel road, but was completely covered with snow/ice. I hardly varied by driving from how I would if it was just gravel, and felt no slip from the tires. Was incredibly impressed with the level of traction they exuded. On one particularly steep and icy hill, I punched it to see if TC would kick on, and got nary a flicker. Really eased my concerns of not going with a dedicated snow tire.

Overall, I'm very impressed with this tire, and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for one do-it-all tire who deals with a moderate amount of winter driving conditions. Of course this is only after two days, to things can always change, but I'm happy with my decision at this point. (pics can be seen in my build thread in the 4th gen forum).

I just put a set of AT3 4S on last week. I was looking for something that I could run year-round, and had some off-road capability without being too unfriendly on pavement. I liked the amount of siping on the Coopers as opposed to most other 3PMSF rated AT tires on the market. I'd narrowed it down to the AT3 4S or the AT/W but was scared off of the AT/W because of concerns about tread life. So far I've only got a few miles on them and haven't driven them on anything more interesting than snowy pavement.

For those of you who've had them on for a little while now, how are you liking them?

Winter update

The tires have been great. Made it through the polar vortex and the current February snow-pocalypse. I've been waiting/looking for opportunities to hoon. Grip up well, takes more to slip for traction control to kick on. I've been able to handle a lot more in 2Hi vs my previous tires. Been leaving it in 4Hi as we've had snow pretty much every other day here in MN.

Still very quiet on road and at highway speeds. No abnormal wear or balancing problems.

Mine have been incredible through freezing rain in the Pacific Northwest. Best wet weather tire I've ever owned by a far margin.

After a lot of deliberation, I just ordered a set of Cooper 4S's in 265/70-17 along with some FN Countersteer Type-X's to replace the stock wheels and tires on my 4runner. Stoked to get the new package installed sometime next week.

I have about 45k miles on my KO2s and while they have a good amount of tread life left the wet traction has gotten pretty bad. I'm considering a set of SL AT3 4Ss.

Cooper at3 4s

I bought these because I live in Colorado and use my 07 as a daily driver and weekend warrior. They are great in snow...don't know about mud yet. Sorry the bottom pics are wonky lol.

I think I may pick these up in 255/75/17. While they are not the most aggressive tire, I think they are the best balance between DD and off-road whilst still being cheaper and lighter than the competition. Any thoughts on this decision before I make the purchase?

I was in line to replace some dry rotted tires on my T4R. My driving is mostly asphalt, city commute and a few maintenance roads a couple times a year while camping. Aggressive and pricey AT tires were out the door, but I didn't want to deal with HT tires again. My main goal was something with more snow bite to deal with the MN winters.

I was always a fan of the original AT3's. Affordable and seemed to have decent reviews throughout, not to mention I've had numerous vehicles with Cooper Tires. We have a set of AT3's on the family's Frontier and are quite pleased with them.

A quick search led me to find the new 4S for only $8.xx over the original AT3s (they went way up in pricing the day I was getting them mounted), and with a $70 rebate, I was pleasantly surprised. A few minutes later, I had a receipt and was waiting on shipping.

$592.14 for stock sized 265/65/17's (paid $138.19/ea before tax after “rollback”, hint hint the store I purchased them from)
$90.50 for mounting fees, lifetime balance and tire insurance
-$70 manufacturers rebate

2 day shipping to the store, 7am apt time, and home with them mounted, white walls out:

Is been about 100 miles and 3 days, so far they have been great. Way quieter than my previous rubbers. Tracked in the rain with no problems. And they've felt more compliant and soft on the road.

I'll post some pictures next to the original Discoverer AT3s next for comparisons. My readings have led me to believe the 4S are really an AT3+ (play on Iphone modeling). In my size, the 4S are 2lbs heavier per Cooper's data. The sidewall is supposedly a bit thicker and designed to look a bit more aggressive over the original AT3. The tread design looks almost similar by first impressions.

I'll keep updating as I go. We have a 3 hr drive up to camp coming up with some service road, and then looking forward to winter to test out the snowflake rating.

They've been fine. Handles great in snow, ice, rain, gravel and the dry. That's literally what I've been on just over this winter. No complaints. Quiet. Smooth.

How's it so far? We've been considering AT3 4S as next tires paired with the Rockstar wheels my wifey likes. Those looks great on your T4R and really looks impressive.

AT3 4s in stock size (265/70 17) put on my 5th gen about a month ago. Out of the norm from what most are doing - going larger and/or more aggressive. I was realistic about my 4runner usage and it made sense to go stock size in a p rated tire. I've had cooper ST-MAXX on my 80 series and was really happy with them so didn't hesitate to buy Cooper again. I love these so far. Just as quiet as the OE AT 20's with much better dry, gravel and - especially - wet performance. Living in the Seattle area, wet performance is key. Haven't been in snow yet but expect good performance.

Looks good. Planning on the same on my 14 SR5 before next winter. One set of tires saves so much headaches of swaps, storage, etc. I've run Discoverer AT3's on my 1997 Discovery 1 and on my 2007 LR3 and they were great on both. Getting something that I can run year round, awesome.

Slight lift, maybe 1/2" last I measured. I have FJ Bilsteins and coils on.

Love mine on-road and off. Highway, fireroads, snow. Really happy with these tires and have a hard time imaging trying something different when it's time unless Cooper makes an ill-advised change.

Stock size, tiny lift & level for me.
