Why is this a CostCo problem as opposed to a problem with the FORD Dealerships not knowing their product!

:fro:

Because Costco gave my info to FOUR dealerships, two of which weren't even in town- if the Costco price is the same, one would have been all that was needed.

Don't they just feed into Truecar anyway? Maybe that was AMEX which was touting their car buying service to me. I'm in favor of making the process easy and if Costco does that, sounds good to me, but any service that just blasts out your information to multiple dealers without actively working on your behalf is no different than going to the manufacturers site, building the car you want and asking for quotes. It's not like Costco has any special leverage. Dealers don't think, "shit, we'd like to ask more for this car, but this guy has a Costco membership, so let's eat the loss. We'll get em next time." It's just another lead for them to follow.

Exactly. Yes the Costco Auto Program does turn out to be a TrueCar thing, at least it was in 2015.

You will get a deal if you're looking for something readily available your in AO that a handful of dealers don't mind discounting.

I tried the Costco deal on a motorcycle and it was absolute crap. Small discount and ridiculous fees through the dealer. I haven’t used it for cars but all those programs are pretty much the same. Whether you go through your employer, a car finder website, or Costco you’ll pretty much get the same deal based on a fake invoice price.
Just email dealerships until you find a price your comfortable with.

Yup, bought mine from costco referral last year. After entering my info, costco sent me an email with a participating dealer within my area. Dealer gave me invoice price and I also received additional $1500 off from year end sale/promotions. Best thing I liked about the experience was how painless it was. Didn't have to negotiate for hours and still got a great deal. After agreeing to the price via email, I was in and out of the dealership within an hour
Same here. But I tried a few different dealerships and 3 out of 4 tried the usual sales bs. The first one was great though and I highly recommend. It just depends who's handling the Costco program, a fleet mgr or s regular sales grunt. That's my thoughts. but I spent no time at all and it was worth it. I was in and out of there in 45 mins and the sales guy was great

What I learned by talking to the two Costco related dealerships around me was that not all of them operate by the books.

One of them used made up pricing, while another used a specific Costco binder that had pricing information for the entire line of Toyota vehicles (this was confirmed by actually calling and talking to someone at Costco).

The Costco authorized dealership that *didn't* use the binder pricing, when called out on it (there was about a $2k difference), said that they had "just been able to update their pricing, and would match it".

I also had a handful of dealers say they would "match Costco pricing", but came no where close to it.

In the end, do your research, compare your options, and make sure even the most legitimate sounding people aren't trying to screw you

COSTCO, USAA etc used to do their own pricing and they would give you an upfront price and give you the name of the dealer who would give you that price.

Now, they've bought into that truecar crap where they send you the name of the dealer and the dealer gives you a price. You can believe the dealer (yeah, right) and buy a car from them, hoping that the price is anywhere close to what they negotiated with COSTCO, or you can contact other dealers t check their pricing.

Last year I was shopping for a GTI and got COSTCO to refer me to a dealer. I emailed the same dealer using a different email address and got a lower price from the regular internet department.

10% off MSRP for a 2020 is the target, with or without Costco pricing. Some dealers will do this deal, especially near the end of the month. Most will not.

There’s nothing wrong with aiming for 10% but I wouldn’t get too hung up on it. I think most people consider the discount to be the sales price of the car before you tack on the dealer fees. Places like New York and California where those fees are limited it’s gonna be harder to get 10% off. In places like Florida where there is no limit and the dealer fees can be as high as $1000 it’s a lot easier to get that discount because they’re baking in a big part of the profit in the dealer fee.

Honestly you can go to most manufacturers sites build the car that you want on their site and then click a request quotes button which sends your build to every dealer in the area and they come back to you with quotes eventually after you wade through pleasantries. By going through a site like Costco or TrueCar maybe it shows them that you’re a lot more price sensitive than other shoppers but most people these days don’t wanna waste time too much with the price of the car. Maybe if you consider it a sport and victory is defined by getting every last dollar out of the deal then there’s better ways to do it but honestly shop what you’re interested in to all the dealers and let them come back to you with prices. Then take the best price you get to your local dealer and see if they’ll match it. I’d always prefer to buy from the local dealer because that’s where I’m gonna have my vehicle serviced and I’ll tell them that. My 2020 off-road premium that I ordered is not coming from a local dealer because they wouldn’t even order a special order for me So I ended up buying from a dealer about 30 minutes away (To be fair I live in Central Florida and there’s a dozen Toyota dealers within an hour of me)

I looked into the Costco program but ended up doing internet sales which was way cheaper than Costco. Ended up with an 18' TRD OR non premium for $32.2+Tax tag etc. Pretty easy to play hardball by your phone or computer lol. I can't do that crap in person.
