Crawl Control Retrofit to SR5 Success!

Thanks!
I'll look into it when I get a chance.
Or wait until someone with a limited does this mod.
Lol
I am not 100% sure this would work on a limited but it might be possible. There are a couple differences I noticed when doing this mod. First is that the skid control/brake booster part number is different on the limited. That doesn't mean the programming is different however. Take a look under your hood and find the skid control ecu on the brake booster and see what the numbers are on it. The SR5 and TE share the same one, see attached picture. The second thing is that the TE cluster that is needed does not have center difflock light in it. I am not sure if that will prevent it from working correctly or not. Also I am not familiar what other things you can do in the limited cluster that might not be available in the TE one. More than likely you will not need to switch out the body control ecu. The 2 pins needed are already activated and used for the seat memory function, so tapping into that will be simple. So I think it is really dependent on the skid control ecu.

I think it's cool you figured this out...I guess I'm just wondering why crawl control is an important a feature to you, especially for the money and time spent to make it happen? Genuinely curious, not trying to be condescending or anything.

I think crawl control is a cool feature, even having the extra knobs and buttons is cool in a futuristic way, but I don't see it as a critical or necessary feature. If the trail only came with a rear-locker and didn't have crawl control, I wouldn't be too concerned, so I guess If I had an SR5 then investing in an ARB air locker would rate much higher than adding crawl control.

I can understand where you're coming from though....When I was shopping for a 4runner I really wanted crawl control since it sounded extremely cool, advanced, and futuristic. Now that I have it....well, I think it is a "coffee table book" feature (ha!), and I wouldn't be crushed if a future vehicle I purchased didn't have it. I remembered looking at FJs (when they were being sold) and being adamant that I wouldn't buy one unless it was optioned with crawl control.

Edit: I find that in 4lo, the 4runner naturally crawls along pretty nicely at 1000rpm on most trails so switching on the crawl control seems like more of a hindrance than a help, in my experience.

2010 TE. I thought crawl control was super cool the first time I used it. Have not used it since except to show friends. I'm totally impressed that the OP did pull off the mod but like a lot of things we all do to our rigs, I don't think it's worth the money or hassle. I'm sure for the OP though, the pleasure and sense of accomplishment is priceless.

EDIT: Possible now for less than $20 with some simple switches and wiring.

EDIT: Successful crawl control retrofit on GX 460. Strong evidence this can be easily added to all of them.

EDIT2: Successful fit of MTS with options to add Front and Wide view monitor/camera system. / Less than $400 for everything.

Anyone tried this on a 4Runner Limited to see if it is possible to work with a different Skid Control ECU?

I'm going to try getting this to work on a GX 460
once parts arrive from overseas against a skid control ECU not native to crawl control. Crawl control can be optioned on the GX 460 via a high level option package.

There are at least 4 different skid control/master cylinder combos one can buy for the GX.

I've ordered the correct Driver Support Computer and Console switch. On the GX crawl speed contol replaces the DAC toggle button in lower left of console switch and an ON/OFF button sits next to toggle. It's a blank on models without crawl option.

The brains for the Crawl Control are in the Crawl Control Switch itself. It communicates with the Combo meter to display and enable it. The body control module lets the crawl control switch communicate on CAN bus. There are no connectors or switches to swap out, just using repair harness parts to populate some connectors. The 2 most expensive parts are the combo meter ~750 and the overhead console, ~700. The crawl control switch is about ~120, and BCM is ~300 and I spent less than $50 on repair harness parts. If you can find any of this used, the price can be drastically cut. Cost wasnt a factor for me in this so to each his own on this point. There will be a full writeup in Toyota Trucks magazine with part numbers and such. I will be sure to post it once it is published.

Any idea which year and issue of the magazine it is or will be in?

Cool that you did it, but I can't imagine spending money to get crawl control. I've wheeled with so many 5th gens and have still never come across a situation where someone used it with success. I know it has a few narrow use cases, but I feel it is razor thin.

FWIW, the new Tacoma is suppose to have a new and improved crawl control system.

10 years later and everyone uses Crawl Control if they have it. Too scared to break hubs
