Crazy 3rd gen prices

It makes me feel kinda bad cause I have quite a few friends that are also looking for 2nd/3rd/4th gen 4Runners but it's impossible for them to find any at a reasonable price, unless they're on their last leg and/or covered in dents head to toe. It was slim pickings a year or two back, but now with the pandemic screwing the market and overlanding becoming mainstream it's become totally impossible. It sucks watching them hope to snag something at $4-6k and see nothing but listings at $10k and over. I paid $4500 for my rig in early 2020 and I suspect if I had waited till now I'd be spending close to $7500 at the very least, and that's being generous. Hell even the alternatives are outrageous; seems like literally anything with 4x4 is fetching twice what it should be, and certainly far, far more than their 2WD counterparts :der:
But to an extent you can't blame them. With the general quality new cars have been over the past 10-15 years and the current downhill direction they're snowballing towards, people are becoming VERY hesitant/reluctant to buy newer vehicles. Especially EVs.


$17k for 200k miles... I've seen muggings go better than that :spit:

We found several good options for ~$4-5k with ~170k-220k miles but they were all 2WD. the 4x4 examples of the same spec are easily $8k+, let alone ones with great maintenance records.

It's looking like she's getting a Subie instead for now.

I paid $4400 for my 4x4 with 230k miles 2yrs ago. If My mom hadn't wrecked the bumper, I could prob sell it for $7k easy... but I don't want anything else.

Lotta love for the Runner.... I like that.. $4400 with 230k? I have 189k and going through some rough times now... 4WD quit, just threw CEL Codes, Damn rear Diff is rusting away...

I've been following the OP listing for a while now. No way would I pay that. They aren't far from where I live in case my '02 craps out. However I wouldn't care for it to be restored and would like to take one from them before they polish the paint and change out the blinker fluid....

Not sure what they were thinking with this one. As others have said, there's just not a market for this with 4Runners. They're still way too common for something like this to be worth it. Out west especially you can pretty easily find a very low rust 4Runner for less than half this price. The engines run forever so that doesn't add any value either.

Also, while it looks nice, I personally wouldn't trust the workmanship of a random company-- at least not enough to pay that amount for it.

You can kinda see its "true colors" on the photos of the gas skid.

yep, prices are going nuts...looked at a 99 4wd with locker yesterday..3rd owner and he has had for almost 10 years, no service records other than a gates timing belt done last year....no idea on LBJ's, brown radiator ( so prob original) 220k miles, torn driver seat, sunroof not working and glued shut, windows are real slow,pass rear does not go up or down, he has never used the locker and it did nto want to kick on... needs tires... ..pictures in add were prob a few years old.....and he is locked at 9.5k and wont budge on price.
there is another ....99 limited, 170k, locker, has a few issues and he is at 11k will need about 1k into it to get it up to snuff ( LBJ's radiator, brakes)
kind of pissing me off.....makes my 2001 look better all the time....but its on its last legs without me throwing in tons and tons $$$$$$$$$$$

side note : they are hard to find good ones up here and price just keeps going up and up, I only paid 4800 for my 2001 in december, but it was a fixer upper ( needed plugs, a coil and a fuel filter, was running on 4cylinders) but its been in a front end wreck and repaired poorly, has more rust then I like, suspension is shot, exhasut is shot, needs timing belt, water pump is now weeping and now that spendy brake master cylinder is acting up, sitting at 290k. Can prob sell for 6-7k the way prices are up here now

2 years ago I paid $3000 for a bone-stock, rust-free, original-owner, 220k, 2000 LTD e-locker. I could have flipped it for a pretty penny with a quick clean-up, but I'd still never have been able to own a 3rd gen now. The market hadn't blown up - and I did get lucky as it was not advertised (word of mouth in the neighborhood). Now it's dirty, modded, dented, and pinstriped but I will never sell it.

Edit - Now we're in a 'steel-bubble' where plate has tripled in price, so armor is going to be a pricey proposition soon til production catches up. Lumber is f*cked too.

no kidding on lumber and metal prices........lumber yards up here wont quote a price more than a week....metal roofing has gone up 4x since last summer.

Same here with wood. I didn't know they were so sky high. I ran into a contractor who enlightened/shocked me. 4x8 plywood $68!! per sheet.

At this moment, there are 5 3rd gen 4x4 going for an average $11074 in my local area. Cheapest being $5k. And 13995 on the high end.

As Endlessblockades mention, I don't think I'm able to replace our 00 that we bought in 2014 from a private owner for 3500, if we had to buy another one.
In 2014 PO had a hard time finding buyers for this rig. It was on CL for 3 weeks. His best offer was 2500 which the PO refused.

I got my 99 totaled and they gave me 9.6K for it with 190K miles on it.. was 2wd 4 cylinder. Probably could have sold for 12K if it didnt get totaled. Crazy part is I paid 9.9K 14 years ago for it. :wow2:

Can you share your insurer? I was thinking of taking mine off Comprehensive because I am afraid they would 'total' it at an undervalued rate if I got hit and I would lose the truck and especially the mods. Buying it back at auction seems like a crapshoot. We have AAA which is one of the most expensive from what I hear (wife has had the policy for years). Did you have to pre-establish a valuation with your insurer or did they look at current prices?

I have AAA and had full coverage... they gave me the option to keep my car with a salvage title plus cash but i wasn't interested. They looked at current market value which was between 7-9K for what they showed as comparable. I also got 2 weeks of rental car out of them so I didnt do that bad.

I now have a 2021 TRD Off Road in Classic Silver Metallic had 33 miles on it when I drove off the lot.

Idk about you guys but I've thankfully noticed them start to drop. I have a few friends that were looking for 4Runners for some time so the other day I decided to take a gander at the FB Marketplace for the giggles, and was surprised to see many listings falling back to the $4-6k ballpark. Most were topping out at $8k and those were built up rigs. Even saw an FJ80 for $5k, though it was very rusted out. Perhaps the bubble is popping... for the time being :whoo:

Timber is at a historic low right now, so low that companies aren't sending loggers out because they're loosing money doing so, yet lumber is at a historic high right now because there's essentially a national shortage that the lumber mills can't fill no matter how hard they try. The cheapest boards of OSB right now are $60+, but you could buy an entire uncut log for that price right now. Absolutely crazy out there.

We are in the middle of a house addition that we started the process for pre-covid (it took 11 months to get the permit - thanks, California). 4x10 sheets for shear walls are $90. Our contractor offered to rip up pieces as spacers where there are no shear walls instead of sheeting the whole thing to save $$$ because things are so crazy.

Here's some more Crazy for you that I just came across today. 2000 "Limited" (VIN says it was an SR5, however) 4WD on eBay.I searched 2000 4Runner to see if a manual or whatnot was out there....

Current bid (of 22) $33,656 "Reserve Not Met" LOL. It's not even an E-locker. Sure, they put a sh1t ton of work into it, but how much were these new again?

That one comes up pretty frequently on here. Super nice looking truck, IMO, though people definitely have differing opinions. I've never seen it bidded up that high. Though the value may seem kinda crazy, I may consider doing something stupid like that if I had F U money. I think I'd rather go for a low mile OEM + one than one that's been torn into and rebuilt. I'm just skeptical of rebuilt mechanical bits vs. Factory built ones. As the years go on, the value of these types of rebuilds will be more commonly accepted. There were just so many of these sold and they're so reliable that buying a full rebuild seems crazy at this point.
