CV axle removal help please

I'm replacing the front driver side CV axle on my 2005 4runner. The outer axle will not budge from the hub assembly(I think that is what it's called.) Because I couldn't get the axle to slide out I removed the four hub assembly bolts and tried to remove it but it's just pulling the entire CV axle with it. Has anyone encountered this? Any suggestions for separating the CV from the hub assembly. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Give it a good wack with your favorite hammer

OK. Should I wack the axle or the hub. I've actually smacked both pretty hard but I only have a nail hammer. Maybe I need a bigger hammer (my wife says absolutely).

Axle, hit the hub and it just pushes it on to the axle more, the axle isnt a pressed fit just splined, just need to free it up. Bhf is your best friend when stuff that should move doesn't want to move.

if you're replacing the axle hit it hard on the axle but only firm tapping on the side of the hub, the shock of tapping on the hub will help loosen it,
you don't want to damage it.

That being said I would rent/borrow a puller to help get it off along with tapping on the hub, if you can find one,
many part stores do lend out tools, you would have put down a refundable deposit in most cases.

Like mentioned above, rent a 3 arm puller from a autoparts store. It's free.
Then grease the splines a little on the new one.
