D2S Projectors V2, 3in, with HID Kit - has anybody tried this kit?

I am contemplating using this kit and wanted to see if anybody has used it? If so, would you recommend it? Pros/cons of it.

This is the exact kit that I'm contemplating using. I've used their HID kits for 10+ years with no issues. I highly recommend DDM if you can be patient since their shipping is a little slow.

Personally, I've seen two DDM tuning kits with non working parts right out of the box.


For me, it's TRS or nothing.

I've ran two DDM kits and never had any issues. I used 35W versions. I can't compare quality because I've never used any other brands but I would use DDM again especially for the price.

I have used DDM tuning HID kits in all my vehicles and my families since 2009. Accord, GLK, Sienna, 2 Prius'. Never had a problem or anything go out. They do provide lifetime warranty but their shipping takes a while since the product comes from China. Quality output though for the price.

I've not used DDM kits since 2007 or so. Back then, I had a lot of problems with "flicker" and stuff just not working.

Around 2010 I started using TRS products and they were AWESOME. Nothing but good things to say. Never had issues, and shipping was always stupid fast.

However, within the past year (while I have been doing retrofits for other people) I have been CONTINUOUSLY dealing with warranty issues through TRS. Multiple bulbs that manufactured incorrectly (see picture of base. That metal band is supposed to be closed, of course), ignitors not igniting (out of the box), ballasts burning out within days of use, and most recently, a wiring harness burning out.

This, along with them not allowing me to ship warrantied parts directly to the end-user, is 99% of why I stopped doing retrofits.

I've been wanting to do the BI-XENON Morimoto Mini D2S Stage III Kit for some time. But think I'll continue to wait with all the new LED technology coming out. I just still can't put my trust in HID's.

Kinda bitter sweet for me to hear this. I want projectors in my 4Runner, but my first retrofit (in my Supra) wasn't super smooth like you mentioned. I had several ignitor issues. I had probably 3 sets of ballasts warrantied within a month, then I was told it was a bad batch and a new batch would be in in a few months. I got that one in and everything was OK for a little while and then one of those ignitors went bad again. So now on my 5th set of ballasts or so. I assume they still work, but I rarely drive the Supra so I can't be sure. I think the bad ballasts not being able to ignite the bulbs may have put a little extra wear and tear on them too.

I thought I was the only one who had ever got bad parts from TRS because everyone talks like they have never had a single quality issue from them. Glad I'm not crazy, but it would be nice to get some modern RELIABLE lighting in the 4Runner.

Funny thing is my issues were in 2013-2014 timeframe, I wonder if they've gotten worse since then or if it's just a luck of the draw kind of thing...

For what it's worth- My FX-Rs put my wife's LED projectors to shame. The light is much more intense, throws farther, and has a nicer cutoff (if you care about that).

Additionally, I honestly think [MENTION=144411]Renton4runner[/MENTION]'s D2S 4.0s put my FX-Rs to shame.

This. I'm sure the DDM product is decent, but I've been dealing with Matt and the guys at TRS for years now (back when VIP was VIP) and won't deal with anyone else. Shipping to Canada takes forever but it's always worth it and they support you if you need anything!

I am super happy with the D2S 4.0s. I didn't spend much time comparing them to Alex's lights, but I'll take his word for it. I recommend them highly.

That's a bummer to hear about the issues you've been having with TRS. I want to do my retrofit once, and be done with it. Time is a precious resource for me, so I can't be spending time re-doing the lights or having the 4Runner down. I really want to determine what is the most reliable route to go, for under $300, and have much improved lighting over stock headlights (and done without just slapping an HID bulb in the halogen housing).
