Daddy's girl's first car is a what...? Am I crazy?

My parents got me an A4 for my 16th and upgraded me to an S4 less than 2 years later. If you trust the kid to take care of it get them whatever you want...... and if she screws up you can take it from her and enjoy it yourself.

Si sold within 6 hours of posting it, $2,500 over blue book. Honda resale value FTW. Honestly though, I'm glad it's gone, I kind of hated it.

Ahhhhhh stay away from vw(Audi,Volvo,BMW,)!!! There will be no money left!!!! They suck to work on and are expensive!!!

I quite like working on VWs actually (I had a Mk3 Gti and Mk4 VR6 before the Si), and it was plenty fun and not terrible to wrench on, at least to me. Yeah, VR6 timing chains and such are plenty expensive, but if maintained, I think they're good cars. Safe too, major plus for my peace of mind. :)

BMWs actually I find are some of the nicest cars to work on. They really feel like they're meant for the wrencher, at least the E36 and 39 I've worked on. Volvo though, no comment, no clue.

Now to find a TDI in reasonable shape or with less than 10 million miles...that's another story.

His name is Chris.

In dad's mind, she's not getting married until I'm at least 50! That's a long ways away, trust me. :)

Not at all bad to work on, at least the older ones. If you exclude these makes then you are limiting yourself on interesting cars to choose from. The cost doesn't matter if you like driving the car.

I'd look into this...

And im very partial to volvo's. older the better. I wish my first car was an 80's Volvo 240.

If I need to buy the GPS to track my kid, then I shouldn't get him/her a car. My kids know. It only take one time. I'll take the car away.

Off topic: In related to Adrian Peterson, I told my kids "Look at me straight in the eyes. I'll be happy to go to jail then raise "Punk @ss " kids. The conversation ended there.

Honestly, if I felt the need to have to track my kids via GPS, then I'd feel as if I'd failed as a parent. Besides, I know I'd hate that kind of thing with a passion in my car, so I wouldn't want to do that to my kids.

"Update" Nothing so far, but the TDI seems to be high on her list but finding one again that's "reasonable", that's the hard part.

Re: Volvos, I've always personally liked the 850 and back...but anything newer really hasn't caught my interest. They all seem too..."mainstreamed" That Volvo charm I liked in the 850 I just don't see anymore.

That's not the exact system i was looking for. I just did a quick search on it. This one has it but it isn't like the other. It just monitors speed braking and throttle. I'd install it never check it and just use the text alert when the car goes over a preset speed.

And not talking bad about your parenting by sharing this. But honestly you've got to have some serious blinders in to believe shes not going to do things you've told her not to.

Since the 850 has lost its charm to you here's one that could never lose it.
2005 Volvo S60 R - Turbo, AWD, Excellent Condition, Low Miles, LQQK

Or if you wanna stick with toyota what about an is300?

I wasn't saying I was a good parent, nor was I feeling a "challenge" to my skills, I was just saying that to me, that kind of things feels too invasive. I was a total rebel myself, so honestly even though my girl is pretty opposite, I wouldn't be surprised if she did something she wasn't supposed to, or hell, even something stupid. She's human, so am I.

I always try to suggest things to my kids (like I how I wanted a safe car for my girl and reasonably economical one), but I never try and bring a "Hammer fist" down on anything. Yeah, she has her curfews, but they are agreed on by both of us first. My putting the GPS in makes me feel a bit too "dictatorial", no trust. The last thing I want my children to feel is that dad is the ultimate controlling say in everything.

Sorry, wasn't trying to "preach" my ideals, just my opinion on the matter.

And the Volvo, it's actually funny you bring up the S60 R, that R is the one that turned me off from "new" Volvos. It doesn't look enough like a brick :) I like brick shaped cars, just one of those odd quirks about my tastes in cars.

EDIT: Like this...drools

IS300, I don't think my girl wants anything with a "name brand", such as a Lexus. She's one to buy off brand clothes and things on purpose, but I guess I could ask. :)

I was just making sure you knew i wasn't tryin to talk bad ;) and i understand your reasons for not wanting to do it. And I love my volvo's. the s60R is a beautiful car to me... But I wouldn't own one.... Ever. I'd buy it for my wife or something sure. And ha... That Volvo aint a brick! It's too new But still does looks damn good doing in. The is300 is a Lexus and all but its a Lexus thats rwd with a 2jz in it that looks amazing.

Now that's a brick.... My old 79 242GT with a b230ft,mustang t5 trans and full suspension. That car was allot of fun

Update: Hybrid madness.

I thought you'd all appreciate the update since you've give your advice on the matter.

So, I come home for lunch and find an Orange Prius C with a temporary registration placard on it. Much like this one.

Not thinking anything of it, my daughter comes running out as I'm still getting out of my truck. She's smiling away. She then asks "Do you like it?"

I replied "You know I hate the Prius." and made some comment about it looking like a traffic cone.

She replies "Yeah I know. I just couldn't pass this one up though, it was the only one left at the dealer for this price." I stopped...

"Wait, you bought that?" I ask, now thinking to myself :scared:

"You said I could get whatever I wanted right?" she puts on her puppy dog face.

"Yeah..." I replied. "I did." :(

"That's why I took out my savings to put the money down on it, just to make sure it wouldn't get sold before you got home today." she justfies herself.

Then before I know it, she starts reciting what sounds like a salesperson's spiel about saving the environment and how it's economical on gas, good for a student etc etc. I didn't hear everything honestly, I knew I said she could get whatever she wanted (under $20k) and I'd provide the cash, but...a Prius C...really? I was honestly really sad because I was looking forward to something cool to work on, not a battery assisted Pokemon like creature.

Anyway, we went for a ride...it was awful honestly. It's so god awfully rough around the edges and there's no power whatsoever, as well as no steering feel. Interior is ugly as hell and the plastics are super cheap. I can not begin to describe how much I hated that car, and I honestly told my daughter that I didn't like it. She was okay with it, she knows I don't lie to her so we're always upfront about stuff like this, but I didn't embellish on the fact that I loathed this car. We did average an "impressive" 37.8 mpg though for our 5 minute spin.

Anyway, I went into the house and my brother was there to my surprise. He asks me "Do you like Faye's new car?" I told him I honestly hated it, but if she was happy then I was okay with it. I must have looked mortally wounded, because he then then bust out laughing, soon followed by my daughter. After looking at them both, my brother then tells me the truth. He and his wife just bought it and thought it would be funny to play a joke on me. WHEW!!! Can't believe I fell for it...

So now that my blood pressure is back to normal, I'm happy to report that we're NOT the new owners of a Prius C!!

**No offense intended for Prius C owners**

The Prius C, because you're too cheap to be a proper Yuppie wanna-be Environmentalist; so you buy the bargain bin hybrid.

You have seriously flawed logic and no understanding of physics. Your statement "Laws of physics, more stuff to shield you = better. Also, the GT is nearly 4,000 lbs, and heavier is better" is not a law, a rule, a thought or anything else in our world. Example: I give you a roll of toilet paper to wrap yourself in for your "shield." You jump off a 30 ft building. Let me know how that works out lol. The most important real law you should be concerned with is F=MA and all the derivations of that formula.

Thank you! It's a shame that our educational system in the USA fails people so badly in basic understand of science.

Specifically, what significantly contributes to making occupants dead in a car crash is Kinetic Energy. Ek=0.5mv^2. If you double the speed, you quadruple the crash energy. A 300hp Mustang is going to make the v^2 component much easier to enlarge.

02SE mentioned friends that sent their kids to an evasive driving class. This is something that every parent with a teenage driver should do. I'm not talking about Taggart's or some other classroom-based DE taught by an off-duty coach or someone else who doesn't know anything about driving. I mean something like the BMWCCA/Tire Rack Street Survival. There are variations all over the country, and look for the following at a minimum:
-Two wheels off the road correction
-Emergency braking
-Emergency lane change
-Skid control for both understeer and oversteer
-LARGE focus on lifting the eyes up to look as far ahead as possible
-Teacher credentials, look for schools taught by race car drivers, HPDE instructors or autocrossers...I.e., guys who really understand vehicle dynamics

This is the single best thing that you can invest in your teenage driver BEFORE anything else. The safest crash is one that doesn't ever happen, & I've never fell for this defeatist attitude that crashes are unavoidable.

As far as a car goes, I would suggest something like the best BMW 525i you can find with a manual transmission (I agree that every adult should know how to drive a manual). Those cars regularly perform at the top of any crash test pile. They are nimble enough to help avoid accidents. I suggest a 525i as it has enough power to get out of its own way, but not enough to impress anyone. That being said, most any mid-sized lux sedan will do a good job of helping to avoid an accident/protecting in case of one, but the BMW is one that you're most likely to find with a manual (although the TL, S50 & A6 also come to mind).

Ahhhhhh stay away from vw(Audi,Volvo,BMW,)!!! There will be no money left!!!! They suck to work on and are expensive!!!

Which of these vehicles have you owned?

I have a BMW E30 M3 & an E90 330i. In the past, I've had other E30s, E36s & an E39. I have not experienced anything like what you've described. I've also owned an A6, which is a little more frustrating to work on due to the packed engine bay, but didn't suck to work on.

Not that it changes your point at all. But for the sake of accuracy, it is my Sister and Brother-in-law that sent their four kids to an evasive driving class.

Pics of the M3 please. My uncle has two, one completely stock and the other with an S54 swap. They are great cars.
