DAKINE Pick-Up Pad Concept

I have a 3rd Generation 4Runner and I'm thinking about getting this surf pad for my surf board:

I have a sweet roof rack on my 4Runner that I don't want to get rid of so I'm looking at alternative ways to transport my surf board. Do you think this surf pad will work out even though I have a rear windshield wiper?

it will probably work, but it doesn't make much sense for a liftgate. those wraparound straps are meant to secure it to a tailgate... if you put this thing on your liftgate it'll be blocking the 4Runner's functional rear window. do you want to be putting this thing on and taking it off all the time?

seems like a lot of trouble with more downside than upside. i'd just drape a folded-ever towel or blanket over the sill for the times you've got longboards sticking out the back.

i dont get it.. why not use this sweet track to transport yoru surfboard.. damn you guys have more money than cents man.

if you're surfing (longboarding) locally, it's much more convenient to roll down the rear window and let the tails stick out the rear like a proper pickup than it is to climb up and strap boards to the roof. i've got a "sweet rack" myself and i only use it if i'm traveling a distance. (with longboards—shortboards ride comfortably inside; you can fit quite a stack!)

btw: you missed a perfect opportunity to say "damn, you guys have more dollars than sense"!

Love the creativity but as others said it doesn't really solve the actual problem. I tried so hard to like the solution because for me it would be the perfect answer to my woes of 4wheeling more advanced and technical trails while transporting bikes. However, there are too many downsides (open window, inconvenience of loading/unloading, loss of cargo space) for it to be a viable solution. Great attempt though!

Not trying to bash, just giving my opinion here. My Bronson is only that clean after I get back home and have given it some TLC. I think the idea is clever, but for me the Yakima rack does what I need it to. However, your bike looks great. My dad hooked me on SC a long time ago with the Blur. He alone is the reason I have my Bronson.

I currently stick my surfboard out the back but it slides around and I don't want to damage the surfboard or the 4Runner.

wow, really? your roads, or your driving, must be more spirited than mine. i'm sure you'll figure something out. enjoy that longboard—and the 3rd Gen!

I'll give you an "A" for effort. Seems like it would be a chore loading it in the back, through the window.

no toyota did not do a good job of directing fumes away from the back window.. after so many generations of the 4runner and sequioas they still haven't figured out that it might've been more beneficial to side vent the exhaust rather than rear vent...

Didn't figure what out? How to move the exhaust tip? Because when you're going over 5mph or there is a slight breeze, it will make absolutely no difference if the tip of the exhaust is moved forward 18 inches. lol.

The roof spoiler on the rear of every 4runner directs air above and away, rather than have it circulate and blow back into the rear window at speed. Remove it. open the rear window, get on the road and tell us again how they (and every car manufacturer that makes SUVs) didn't figure it out. Sure some still manages to get back in, but that little spoiler has a job and does it well.


Daniel, you need a shorter surfboard.

Nice looking bike OP. I see cars, suv's etc using bike racks all the time and it totally obscures the license plate. I think bike racks are a pain in the butt constantly removing, installing. I like your idea. I have always put the seat down and just use an old towel to rest the wheel on depending on how dirty I got it which means the towel always goes down. I do prefer to have that rear window up whenever possible
