dash cam wiring

I recently bought Rexing dash cam. Can I hard wire it to the map/dome light? Is the +12v to map lights switched or always hot?

Has anyone done something similar before, maybe connected GPS or dash cam to map light circuit?

Yes, the map lights are always hot.
I installed an auto dimming mirror, so had to run a wire from the lower kick panel fuse box to the map light area. I used this to power the dash cam.

See the first few picture to get an idea about how to run a wire to the map area. Super simple.

Yes very interested on how this camera does. So many mixed reviews on just about every dash cam out there, one could go crazy trying to find a cam that works well enough to actually help in various situations i.e. Accidents! I'm also looking for one that can record while parked or sensors that turn on with movement or g-force.

Hope the install goes well and we are treated to a full review in a couple weeks

Very well said!! I can't count how many "reviews" I've read on dash cams. Just when you think you found the right one...you read where several people say it sucks!?! Very confusing!!

Although, now the price is starting to come down were you can almost buy one and if it's not what you want...you can afford to get a different one without going broke.

Really looking forward to reading the end result from the OP!

Not a dash cam, but i bought a wired back up camera and hooked its power up to the stereo amp turn on.

Dash cam successfully installed yesterday. Took about an hour or so. I am heading to Moab this coming Monday and will post my reviews upon return.

I chose to run the wire behind the headliner and through the passenger side A pillar. I removed map light and sun roof control console and mirror so to have better access to the headliner. I was able to push the wire inside the headliner and A pillar plastic trim using a plastic spoon and didn't have to unscrew the handle to remove the a pillar plastic trim. I routed the wire underneath the glove compartment. Currently I am using 12v outlet for power.

Eventually I will do what Ripcord did to connect his radar detector. I will use add a fuse and wire it to an auxiliary 12v supply behind the stereo.

Most dash cam have 5v input so I couldn't just connect it directly to 12v supply of off fuse tap. There is harness available on amazon specifically designed for dash cam that could be another option.

I will post some pics tomorrow. I am very satisfied with installation. My dash cam is affixed to the windshield with 3m adhesive so it won't keep falling down, which seems to be an issue with suction cups. The wiring is hidden and installation looks clean. My other vehicle, 2006 Nissan Xterra, has a cheap dash cam with suction cup that loses suction in extreme heat or cold. I will replace that dash cam soon with the one that I just installed in my 4runner.
