Dash illumination

how are you guys running dash illumination to your switches? there's got to be a better way to "tap" into existing wires. i'm running the AOB switches, let's say you have 4 switches one for the arb compressor, one for a roof led bar, one for led rear lights, and one for some ditch lights. that would require you to tap 4 connections to existing wires. is there a better way to do this? thanks for your thoughts

Hi samsung,

You only need tap ONE courtesy illumination circuit wire for back-glow aftermarket push-buttons. Once you have your illum source, you can Daisy chain (link) the switches back-glow circuits together (In parallel)!

thank you Rigtec. that makes sense, i think i'm going to put a t-tap in the windshield deicer switch since it's close to all the other switch blanks that i'm planning to use, and daisy chain them to that.

Good idea! NOTE: 'Regarding the courtesy illumination circuit': The 'GREEN' wire on the windshield deicer switch is POS (+) and the 'GRAY' wire is NEGATIVE (-)! BTW: As an option, you can use these WIRE TAPS to avoid cutting into your courtesy circuit wires as an alternative, ...and please keep us informed as to how your AOB switch project is going; it will definitely help someone else when attempting to perform a similar task!

Okay I tried this and in the process shorted something:

Here is my situation:
All the lights went off in the overhead panel, the stereo side lights, the ac lights, and the wiper lights, sill get power to the green wire on the wiper switch, but the grey wire seems to not work.

When i run a lead off the gray wire to a metal spot on the frame all the lights turn back on? any ideas?

Also the dimmer switch still dims the gauge cluster and the radio screen, but if I touch the lead from the wiper switch to metal and get the lights back on, they wont dim now... Took apart the dimmer and its not burnt.

I am completely lost as to what happened and where. I went and looked at interior pictures on google to see if something wasn't lighting up trying to pinpoint where the short is but everything turns on when I touch the lead from the grey wire to metal, even the wiper switch still works.

I literally have the same issue I've since disconnected anything from the factory harness and i have no backlighting on any switch but the guage cluster and radio still dim and there are no bad fuses. Could it be a relay?

Im curious how the ground connections would work. my ARB compressor has a ground running to the switch and so do my ditch lights. if I used the chain portion of the swtich, the ground is tied into the main chain - I wouldn't have anywhere to connect the ground wire coming into the cab. would I Just not connect it?

the illumination would be nice, but I don't know if I want to redo all my wiring for my ditch lights and compressor so both switches could illuminate. hmmm

What I found is the brake controller harness that is left unused for most who don't tow a trailer. Looks like it has a green wire that has power when the running lights are on (see post 20 in this thread: Redarc brake controller install). I'm hoping to create a plug and play harness from this to provide power to the OEM switches.

Great idea. OEM part number for this pigtail that plugs into the car is 82132-60110. (Do you still have the one that came with your 4Runner? If not, you can buy them online for as little as $10.).

You are right that the green wire is powered when the tail/parking lights are on.
