Dash Indicator

I bought a 2014 4Runner Trail in Oct that was a Demo. Came with 4k miles. Took it in maybe Dec at 6k miles for the rotation - combination no time/dealer scheduling conflicts. Now the dash says Maintenance required at not even 9k miles.

Does the 4runner have logic to this dummy light (takes into account engine load, use, etc) or is it just based strictly on time/mileage? Should I just take it in now or wait til the 10k mark.

Strictly on mileage. Sounds to me like the dealer didn't reset it from the last service (or they reset it at that 4K mark you referenced). It happens. I make sure to confirm a reset when I get a service done.

99% sure that is a dummy light that you can reset per manual. Mine came on around the same time (assuming indicating oil change) however I change at 5,000 intervals. So while it was time that was my 2nd not 1st. I don't think the system is a "smart" system like on some of the GMC/Chevy's ( maybe others) that are supposed to be based on calculations of # starts, temps etc....not really sure what variables they take into account but I don't think the 4runner does that. Could be wrong though, will let someone chime in who may know more.

Mileage only. I have owned vehicles with smart systems too that took into account several variables. You know what happens with them? They turn into mileage based systems too. Most people drive the same style throughout the time of ownership so the vehicle needs servicing around the same mileage every time. It's not like people drive 5K miles in the city and then drive the next 5K in the desert at ten mph. Point is the mileage ones are just as good as the variable based ones. Actually measuring in hours ran would be just as good or better.

I figured it wasn't a 'smart' system but it just came up at an odd mileage. Around the 8.8k mark...

I will bring it in closer to the actual 10k mark.

Thank you all
