In Depth Review of 50W Saber LED's

Just finished writing an in depth review for trail4runner.com of the DDM Tuning Saber High Beams. They are incredibly bright! In addition to a visual review I took light intensity measurements with a LUX meter and compared them to the stock halogens and an HID kit.

Here is a comparison of the DDM Tuning Sabre 50w LEDs to stock in the high beam. (Stock on Left/Driver’s & DDM Tuning 50w Sabre on Right/Passenger) Given how people rave about them, I’m pretty unimpressed. They honestly don’t seem much brighter & I’m not sure the stock Halogen don’t seem to give an overall better dispersal.

The Kelvin is much better with the LED in my opinion but this can be adjusted with Halogen as well. I’ve run PIAA halogens for 16 years in my Pathfinder & 9 in our ‘06 JGC. They cost alot but last forever & are flawless.

As for “old man eyes”, it’s worth noting that “older” eyes may do better with more “yellow” light. My Mom is 74yo & definitely gets better contrast with the 3700-4100K range. I like 5-6000K at 48ya. An Ophthalmologist buddy of mine says that our visual perception is about what he would expect given aging. Ultimately, we don’t all really see the same thing & vision is subjective.

For what it’s worth, I put them in our family MDX & they appear brighter in that vehicle to my wife & I. I’m also probably going to put them in my 2002 Pathfinder once I install my JDM HIDs (the lows are HID, the highs 9005)

The problem is, today, I got pulled over because of the flicker on my DRLs. Is there a fix for this, or do I need to purchase a different set of lights?

turn drl off in traffic or during periods of low light, but not low enough to trigger the auto lights

There definitely is! Our DRL-compatible kit is the only one like it in the entire aftermarket:

9005 LED Headlight Kit | 9005 LED high beam Upgrade

If you select the optional "DRL LED Drivers" when ordering, those will absorb the pulse coming from the factory wiring and make the LED bulbs run at a lower (but solid) intensity

Do you like having the DRL's? If not the mod to bypass them us uber easy to do and reversible. That's another way to solve your problem:dancin:

I do like having them, otherwise anytime it rains I'd have to go full headlights in the daytime (they have a law here about rain + lights). They actually look good too, except for the flicker, because they are bright white, so it makes my truck just a little different than the others!

I was considering the Aiden James kit, but last I checked (a while ago), it was still difficult to get, and I'm not sure I'm qualified to install it.

Has anyone installed these, and do they take care of the flicker? Reviews on Amazon seem to indicate not.

I just put the decoders on after installing the lamps and it did help with the flicker. It's still there to a small degree, but MUCH better.

Killed my DRLs

Today, I installed DDM saber Pro high beams. The high beams work but I did not have daytime running lights. I ended up replacing the bulbs with the original and the DRLs are still not working. I cant find any instance of someone burned up a fuse or something. Anyone have any clues on how to restore my DRLs? I actually would like to have that function back...

EDIT: Ok I feel stupid - my DRLs came back on once I took the truck for a drive. they must not come on in park or timeout or something.

After I had someone actually driving behind me with these on - I would not do them because it is highly irritating for other drivers. Or at least I would not drive around with DRL's on even during the day.

Not sure if that person is on here but it was a black sr5 following me down Rampart/Santa Fe(85).

Due to the angle of the high beam lights it is quite irritating driving a regular car and seeing 2 bright dots of concentrated light constantly in the rear view mirror.

I can see that yes the color is nice, and since they are not putting out visible beams of light during the day the driver thinks they would be fine, but it is quite annoying to others.

Understand this is an older thread, but any updates on the bulbs discussed or any new LEDs that are recommended?

I like all the products mentioned (DDM, Xenon Depot, and Morimoto), just hesitant about the DRL flashing. I do use those a lot.

still using the saber 50ws and still think they are the best bang for the buck upgrade i've done. Yes the DRL is way too bright and the flickering makes it even worse for other drivers. The simple solution is to turn DRL off during the day, esp when in traffic or in dim rainy conditions where the DRL are very intense for other motorists.

The pro's vastly outweigh the cons to these IMO
