Dealer maintenance history - private?

Recently purchased a replacement 4Runner and requested all of the maintenance history from the dealer since the Carfax report advised that maintenance occurred at the dealership.

I was told that this was private information that pertained to the original owner and they couldn't / wouldn't share it.

Car is in great shape, I'm just looking for all info so that I have it and can determine what maintenance was completed in more detail than what was provided by the Carfax report.

Is this normal? Should I press harder for info that I feel pertains to the car, and not the owner?

Toyota dealerships aren't known for service.

The receipts have a little thing called NPI Non Public Information on them and dealerships are not allowed to distribute that without the permission of the customer whose name appears on it. A simple address is part of the NPI. You can thank your good ole Uncle Sam for that!

This is typical with BMW, Landrover and Merc.. They should be able to print it out and cut off the owners details.

It’s unlawful for them to do so unless they redact all the NPI and I’m guessing they don’t want to spend the time/effort to do that. There are dealerships that do it though.

agreed, I traded in a suv awhile ago and was contacted by the dealer a few weeks later asking if I had another key. I told them yes , but that was not in the agreement during the trade in and it would cost them an additional $500 and they would need to pick it up or shipped at their expense.

I had the same issue when shopping for a used Jeep. They wouldn't give the work done at the dealership without the original customer consent. Passed on the vehicle felt they were hiding something

Sorry so late with the reply but no time for the forums with great weather. So a hot day will do.

All "records" that are kept are digital with all of the owners info on them. Maybe many of you all do not mind being "contacted" when someone wants to purchase a vehicle but if I wanted to "sell" it I will do that on my own. Many creepers out there now and would rather not have them knocking on my door or calling me about the old rig.

I just sold a 2007 Mercedes SLK 280. Buyer flew out to SoCal from Minneapolis, MN. He asked if I had all the maintenance receipts. I told him I did all the maintenance myself, save for a few repairs and I had receipts for those. After about a month and half of discussions, photos, videos, we settled on the sale. I advised him to wait until April to drive it back as the car was squirrely in wet conditions and could not imagine it in snow. Well he he hit snow going through Vail Pass in Colorado. He got it back home and subsequently wrote me a nice letter thanking me for how well I took car of the car (it was my wife's).

I think CarFax is worthless. I know enough and do enough work on cars to assess their condition. Dealers are worthless. I've forgotten more than their techs will ever know.

Yeah that's my point. For both my current 4Runner and my old Audi they just gave me a printout from their database that was just date, VIN and service performed. Why would it have names and addresses on it?

They just don't want prospective used car buyers looking what service was/was not performed on the sketchy used cars they're pushing. The PII excuse is just more of the unending line of bullshit that the stealership runs.
