Dealership offered to buy your 4runner..

So, I had some service done at the local dealer. I know, "do it yourself! You overpaid!" etc. etc.

However, about an hour after leaving I had a call from their sales folks wanting to make an offer. It's a 2016 black Trail with 27k on the dial. No, I am not wanting to sell this thing, I love it! My only upgrades is a Gobi rack (hey no wait time for a buyer!), CBI rear bumper, Bilstein 5100/5160 (the rears don't have the reservoir, not sure of model number off hand) , Dobinson coils in the back, and Shrock Works dual battery kit (still missing the 2nd battery, I've been lazy).

I am just curious, is this a legit offer or just another sales tactic? Any experience? I told them to call back later today, I am curious at what their "offer" is.

In my experience it's always just an attempt to get you to trade in your car for a new one - and they can make some margin on both sides. So you end up with a new car you didn't want, and they end up with some of your cash and the chance to make some margin on the used car on top of it (since they never pay the same as you could get on an individual sale).

Our local dealer does the same thing from time to time. I am not sure if it's a sales tactic to help move inventory or if they see a need for certain models on the used market or maybe it's both?!

I had a nicely built FJC Trails Team with a manual transmission a few years back and every time I'd go in for service the sales manager would beg me to sell it to him. His argument was that it would be a good magnet for drumming up sales on their modded vehicles and accessories and of course he saw the potential to sell it for much more than book value. I sold it to an individual for cash and for a few thousand more than what he was willing to offer me so no loss on my end. I kinda miss that cruiser from time to time.

Yea, kind of what I was thinking. Even though I am always hoping I could my a profit off the dealer :) - I know, never going to happen.

Dealers will never conduct a transaction where they aren't making money in some way. If they buy a car, they will be certain they can sell it for more in a reasonable amount of time. If they sell a car, they only way they will drop the price significantly is if they are getting some incentive from the manufacturer you may or may not see.

They are probably talking to you because they know they could re-sell your vehicle quickly.

But if you want to cash out, you are always better off selling privately per previous poster. You can see the difference between what you would get in an individual sale vs. selling to a dealer on kbb.com.

EDIT: I just priced a 2016 Trail black 27k mileage in my zip code. If I trade to a dealer, the range is $28,400 - $30,400. If I sell myself, the range is $31,500-$33,900. So you can see what's going on. Dealer gives you ~$29K and sells it to someone else for $32K.

Recently received an email from our dealer. Offered to buy our TRD Offroad. Mentioned they had a buyer looking for that specific model. Maybe? Maybe Not? Figured it was a standard sales pitch. Email also offered to get us into a new model for the same monthly payment.

I got / get those letters all the time - first was for my 14 FJ, then it was for my 16 tundra and now for the 17 4Runner, they just want to low ball you on a trade in.

Don't forget that you also get a tax shelter on a trade too. In Texas vehicle tax is 6.25%, so if that dealer gives you $30,000 for your trade you'd gain another $1,875 in a tax shelter netting a total of $31,875. Now if you're just looking to get out of it then it doesn't make as much sense, but if you are buying another vehicle on top of the trade then you made up that difference all in one transaction.

I get a letter from my local dealer about every 2 months or so wanting me to trade for a newer model. It tells me what my new cost and payment will be and what my current payment is with Toyota credit. But, we refinanced that loan with a local bank for a better rate a few months later. That was about 4 years ago and I still get these letters! The letters also come with no return address; so you don't know it's from Toyota until you open it. Pretty lame. I also get the occasional cold phone call; even after asking them not to call.

its a LEGIT SALES TACTIC - just away for them to get you to upgrade, example I went browsing at the ZR2 Colorado just to see and the sales guys comment when he saw the 4runner "I have someone who wants that exact truck .....sure you do buddy

Get the same calls/letters on my wife’s Mini. Just marketing.
Hahhaa! I get the same for my wife's mini-Van [emoji23]
Seriously though, I do, and I got tired of telling them that we don't even own it anymore. Really annoying as I can't trust another Texas number now that isn't in my contacts.

Just simply put to the OP - they didn't earn the nick name stealer-ships for nothing...M2C

sales tactic

It's a sales tactic. It's often a very effective one.

What they do is find vehicles that have equity in them, or at least that likely do, and try to get the customer to trade it in for a new one before the customer has a chance to do their research. This often nets thousands in profit on the trade for the dealers.

It's often a "if I can get you in the brand new model for the same payments would you be interested?" Typer approach. And a lot of people think "well yeah!"

They'll offer you low end of BB retail

Definitely a sales tactic. They go through service records and look for lower mileage Toyota’s that they can make a profit on so when you get a new vehicle they get a win win on sales

Every car I ever bought/serviced from a dealer, starting in the mid-2000's, I got a "we will buy your car! it is a hot market!" advertisement, I get it via email now days.

Dealers don't make much on selling a new vehicle. They make $ mostly from service. If they keep their customer base in newer vehicles, then they can extend the serviceable relationship with the customer. Also they do make $ on selling your used vehicles.... straight form my best fried who was a Toyota service writer.

I get those offers in the mail and via the phone all the time...

they make u feel special until you sit down, and when you negotiate for the price of the new vehicle, then proceed to try and rape you on your trade in value...

Not worth it to me.

I rather have the leverage to negotiate by not letting the dealer know that I'm going to trade in a vehicle until after i settle on the new car price...not before...otherwise they are going to waste your time.

I got those same calls and emails on my 2010 trail from 2 to 4 years after I bought it

I get the same thing on my 10 acres from banks and realtors on occasion, the problem is the house I built on it 18 years ago.
