They drain the engine of oil and replace it with two quarts of a sodium-silicate solution. The heat of the operating engine then dehydrates the solution leaving solid sodium silicate distributed throughout the engine's oiled surfaces and moving parts," says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration publication. CASH for CLUNKERS was one of the the biggest scams ever pulled on the American public. I mean this program is so F'd up.

On one city block people are turning in perfectly working trucks for a "cash credit" towards a new vehicle. The vehicles are then destroyed by the state. At the same time in another part of the city, a poor family is scraping together cash to buy a vehicle while struggling to feed their kids. I ask: why didn't we just give them the car instead of destroying it? With 40 million people on food stamps (as of Dec. 2010), it is pretty clear that the United States has a major poverty problem.

I'm also offended by this program because it goes against all common sense economics and free market ideals. It is a handout to big auto companies and that is all. The rest of us had to pay for it with taxes, even those of us (like myself) who kept our vehicles.

Don't feel so bad, many of the cars and trucks got exported to asian countries after there motors were blown, and they were given new life there, or so i have heard.

i used to work for a tow company when all this was going on. there were a lot of vehicles that we towed to junk yards that were for cash for clunkers. and im sad to say a lot of them were toyotas in perfectly good condition to pass on to someone else.

lets just say thats how our government works. its back ass backwords. it really pisses me off how bad our county is ran. a good example is people that are career criminals get 100s of chances. and are in and out of jail. but if what guy screws up once they make an example out of that person and make him pay bad compared to someone that has been in and out of jail all of their lives. trust me i know from personal experience. once with me and once with a family member that totally got screwed because the police lied through there teeth. anyways enough said about that lol

almost every part on a toyota can be used for someone else. unless it is completely destroyed. its a shame that they destroyed them like that. it brakes my heart lol because i will never ever buy an american made car they are junk to me unless they were built in the 70s and later.

Yeah, that had to be one of the worst, most damaging policies that government has come up with. They created a ton of waste that won't be made up for by the fuel offsets for thousands of years. This was a case of environmental science and government run haywire. The environmental impact of making the new cars was far worse than the emissions of the scrapped vehicles.

Such a waste, and such a misguided program. It's amazing what kinds of kickbacks the gov't can get away with if they sell it as "good for the environment". This is like the push for ethanol blended fuels all over again, backwards progress.

As Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear said when Britain did the same thing and had entire airstrips full of cars. Why don't we just send them all over to the third world? That would certainly promote some goodwill, and we apparently don't want them anyway.

Cash for clunkers was a shining example of the government's complete incompetence in business matters (if nothing else).

They really thought that it was a good idea to not only destroy millions of perfectly good vehicles when it was clear that there was a recession on the horizon (obligating the people to new, expensive car payments). On top of that, they caused a temporary demand spike which was promptly followed by a demand dip for months afterward... right when the auto companies were struggling to re-tool their production lines and scale thier operations to fit the changing market. At the time, it was probably the worst thing that could have happened, as they were forced to hire temporary workers and pay huge overtime expenses throughout their supply chain, then promptly fire their workers and suppliers a month later.

Nobody won in cash for clunkers except the politicians. Obviously there was not a single person working on that program who has ACTUALLY worked outside the public sector. Cash for clunkers was one of the most bone headed moves our government has made in recent history.

Stupidity. I would've accepted it as a parts donation. I'm sure the people who traded in their rides were happy to buy new pieces of crap. People love shiny new things.
