Death of my 4runner

So I am here to say that my beloved 4th gen has driven the last hill and passed its last honda. While driving home from work the other night I had a guy in a BMW X5 pull out on me on the local highway. Needless to say I couldn't do much and the truck tracked dead true while abs went crazy trying to stop me.

and even though it was front to front (even if he was angled) this was the final resting place of my dying beauty.



The good news is that he admitted to not seeing me and he admited to pulling out from his stop sign onto a highway (turning left across my lane) and not seeing or knowing I was there until he heard my horn and tire squeeling. by then it was too late. So I should be getting a replacement vehicle since this is not fixable all on his bill without affecting my driving record or insurance. Funny enough all the replacement vehicles have working a/c, tail fins and roof racks. I am hoping to find an 05 or newer so I can get the 5 speed auto as well. I dont mind higher mileage but would like to find a repo unit or something along that line. I might also get into the Tacoma 2005 and up.

Wow...good to hear you are ok. That's a lot of carnage, what were the speeds involved? Good luck finding a new runner, 05 is a good place to start I love mine!

Thanks for the quick reply's. I have thought about the armor I was making at the house. I had all the metal and the layout. I am sure I would have still totaled it since i was doing 80km/hr when I hit the brakes and didn't have very long to react.

I know I wasn't even going that fast but I just came out of a 40km/hr corner.

I was only thinking about the tacoma because I am a welder by trade and might bob the box back. Same generation and motor/transmission setup. Otherwise I will get another 4runner.

This is a huge testament to how safe this vehicle is.. I came out with minor back pain and a hurt wrist. You cant get much better then this.

Sad deal but thankfully noone was hurt.. Definitely get another Runner IMO.. Reminded me of a buddy of mine from work whom a few months ago was coming out for work fixing to start a graveyard.. Unfortunately guy fell asleep at the wheel and ended up flipping his truck 4 times.. He was hurt pretty bad but nothing that wouldn't heal thankfully and he's up and at it again.. When he decided on a replacement he said he was getting a Silverado. I asked him how could he not get what he had (had a 2006 crew cab Frontier 4x4) considering it kept him alive? He paused for a while and replied "No shit huh?"..... Just sayin.. A truer test than that doesn't come around very often thankfully..

I like many others feel very safe in the 4Runner!

There are way too many drivers out on the road not paying attention, distracted by cell phones, e-mails, texts, loud music... the list goes on and on.

Unfortunately, riding defensively most of the time on my motorcycle and road bicycle... not good for the blood pressure. :redbrick: Though, I still enjoy both... a lot!

Glad nobody was hurt seriously. I'm always interested in crash reconstruction. It's interesting how the vehicles move, turn and crumple upon impact. Then looking at where the vehicles sit after the crash is interesting.

Good luck on finding another 4Runner. Proven vehicle.

Glad you are well. This will get me to consider long and hard the kind of vehicle my college age son is looking to get. He'd been looking at sedans and the like (e.g. Accord, Camry, etc.) but I'm now going to strongly consider getting another 4Runner. He's concerned about the gas used on his commute to school on a daily basis but his safety is far, far more important.

Seeing the results of a serious accident in living color helps set priorities real quick.

well im glad to see that you are ok, I have been in a very similar accident and was not as lucky then. 79 ford 250 vs a 03 dodge neon, head to head at about 45 mph each. I was a passenger in the ford and it was a brutal seen. I would stick with a Toyota.

My wife really wants the new jeep grad Cherokee. I showed her the difference in construction, unibody vs body on frame. I told her, she and someday our kids will never be in anything but a toyota 4runner or my future Ford Raptor because these pictures. This is coming from a die hard Ford fan. I was skeptical about the 4runner because, we bought it with 110,000 miles. I have been turned into a believer. I love this T4R! 116,000 and the only thing i have done is a tune up, brakes, and now the lower control arms and camber bolts cause they seized up.

Glad you are okay! Just goes to show how well built and safe these suv's are. I say try and find another T4R.

I love mine with the v8 and 4x4. Better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it. It also still gets an average 23 MPG.

These 4runners get pretty good mileage. get 2005 and up v6 OR 2006-2009 v8. When you look under the hood you must see VVT-I for better mileage. I was getting 9L per 100km (26mpg) on the highway and 11L per 100km (19mpg) in town and I could have been better in town and I have the V6 model.

I would get a gas card and have my kid (if I have one) use that to fill up. Keep in mind it would be restricted to 1.25 times the cost of driving to and from the college at max.
