The v6 is vvti from 2003 and up. still used the same motor in this years tacoma and 4runner. the v8 wasn't vvti till 2006.

Looking around I have heard that there are some great deals in the states. I do agree with getting the same vehicle minus I need the truck more then the SUV. So I am gonna be looking for the Tacoma in the same style. It has the basic same front end so that will work for me.. plus the heater controls are better in my books (simple). I am still waiting for them to get back to me regarding my back and wrist. My back is starting to kill me for doing anything but sit or stand. If I try and bend over or pick something up its a F*%@ B(#%H

On a side note, I don't want to be grammar grannie but since you're shopping I'll point out that V8 vvti starts in 2005.

Wow, ouch!!! So glad you are okay and walked away from that accident, it must have been heart stopping. I got rear ended once and I still freak out when people pull up behind me too fast! Like all the other, I def. reccommed another Runner!

Awesome to know how well these trucks hold up.... I'd rather deal with a hurting back than a hospital bed for weeks to months.

I totaled my 1998 4Runner May 9th, 2010 and she did perfect too. I walked away with nothing but seatbelt burn a a few aches that went away within about a week or two after the accident. Hope this doesn't happen to my 2003!

BTW, V6 has had VVT-i since it was introduced in 2003. V8 got it in 2005, and you can tell that from the black intake.

These 4runners get pretty good mileage. get 2005 and up v6 OR 2006-2009 v8. When you look under the hood you must see VVT-I for better mileage. I was getting 9L per 100km (26mpg) on the highway and 11L per 100km (19mpg) in town and I could have been better in town and I have the V6 model.

I would get a gas card and have my kid (if I have one) use that to fill up. Keep in mind it would be restricted to 1.25 times the cost of driving to and from the college at max.

I could care less about the gas or the cost. I'm not on this Earth to save the environment (although i certainly do care) and I can afford the gas. If he is in an accident like yours and is one ounce less injured than if he had been in a sedan, then it is clearly worth it to me. No brainer.

I just need to convince him to prefer driving a truck over a sedan.

WOW, OP, glad you are ok. Well, if this accident doesn't make you a believer that your truck saved your life (can't believe how bad the BMW took the hit) then there is really nothing any of us can do. I'm sure deep inside you KNOW you should get another 4Runner.

X5 is BMW's top SUV model(might be wrong since there is X6), the 4runner is not even Toyota's top model SUV. German fans always bash about Toyota's safety, now the truth is...

I was only thinking about the tacoma because I am a welder by trade and might bob the box back. Same generation and motor/transmission setup. Otherwise I will get another 4runner.

Think long and hard before buying a Tacoma. You're young and can handle the ride, I suppose, but in fact 4Runners ride "a lot" better than Tacomas. If you have wife or children they may object to the Tacoma's ride, having been "spoiled" by the 4Runner. Test drive the Tacoma on the roughest roads you can find and make sure everyone can stand the ride before buying it.

Just sayin'.........and if I'm honest, I hope you get another 4Runner!

OP, my wife in her 03 was t-boned over a month ago. SUV's been totaled. She survived with some shoulder pain & laceration on her arm. But otherwise ok. Definitely the 4rnr held up. I Don't mind the gas consumption. It's a safe vehicle. Definitely get another 4runner. I did. It's an 05 V6 Limited.

So I am updating a 6 year old post because I am kinda around again.
After the pain of rehab for 6 months I took up truck driving and dealt with horrible insurance, got screwed without lube and came out living on the other side.
I currently own a 2015 toyota tacoma double cab long box modified and a 2005 4runner v8.
the tacoma is my beast though... cant say it doesn't ride good anymore lol. its got massive travel, king 2.5 and able to hold everything and the kitchen sink.
The 4runner is my daily right now while I do a 4.6 v8 swap to the tacoma.
not sure whats gonna happen to the 4runner after the tacoma is done. still appreciate the safety and comfort for a stock unit.
