Diagnostic help please?

Vehicle:
2000 Sport 5 speed 5VZ - 182K miles
2k miles ago (2months) did the whole timing belt, water pump, t-stat, seals, etc and thoroughly cleaned MAF, IAC and throttle body. Replaced all plugs and wires and did all 4 gear oils at the same time. Truck has been running great if not for maybe a very slight loss in fuel economy and throttle response over the last few years. I chalked it up to the old gal getting some grey hairs.

Symptom:
Highway driving 65mph downhill in 5th gear, highway starts to go up a grade so I downshift to 4th before applying more throttle as I let out the clutch. RPM climbs then falls then climbs again as if I were pushing the clutch in and out slightly. I was already planning on my first application of Seafoam (top end spray) today to see if it helped with the grey hair issue. I was very impressed at how well the seafoam worked; initial OBDII data indicates a full 1- 1.5 mpg fuel economy increase driving around town and throttle response feels better. However, I was able to replicate the symptom this afternoon on my sea-foam test-drive, and again only in 4th gear at the same speed.

Diagnostics:
No codes except for running rich (probably from the seafoam). Cleared it, then nothing more and truck is running great. I'm just a bit concerned as I've got a big Baja trip next month and trying to make sure everything is dialed. My initial reaction is throttle position sensor and I just read a bunch of other posts but still not sure how to go about testing it (I'm a noob). If its not that, I'm not sure where else to start. Little help, please.
Thanks

Not really sure from your description, but I wonder if maybe your clutch is starting to slip. Trying to accelerate up a grade in a higher gear is usually where the very first signs of a wearing clutch occur. I've lived on the same hill for over fifty years and only owned manual cars all that time. I know of what I speak. How old is your clutch?

Thanks...bummer. After reading up some more on clutches, this definitely sounds like it. I'm still on the original clutch, so I guess 16 years/180K is pretty good. I guess it was just wishful thinking on the TPS, but deep down I was worried it was the clutch. Unfortunately I don't have the skills/knowledge/equipment/time etc to take on a clutch job...ouch$$ Probably time to replace rear main seal, too ouch ouch$$ anything else?. I guess next step is deciding what kind to get; Im seeing a lot of folks using the Aisin CKT-040 Clutch Kit, Marlin Crawler and the LCE dual comp clutch. I'm not really rock crawling and this is my daily driver so I'm not sure if the HD clutches are worth it. Any thoughts?

I'm one of the people that did the AISIN CKT-040. Very happy with it. I did it myself, as well as shifter seat bushings, clutch slave, rear main and starter contacts at the same time. Really a pain to do without a lift, but saved me $$$. But definitely takes skills/knowledge/equipment/time etc. You got 180k on the stock AISIN, (I got 160k, but I have NJ stop-and-go traffic). The other clutches were almost double when I priced them. How long do they have to last to justify the price?
