Did first oil change last night.....

Man that was a breeze compared to my Ram!! I have to jack the Ram up high so I can writhe my bloated ass under there to get to the oil filter, located on the passenger side rear of the block right near the transmission bellhousing. Always sucks having the oil run down my arm and into my armpit when it breaks loose of the threads. That's always fun.

But the 4Runner, that was like taking candy from a baby!! Just lifted it up a half a foot or so, set my drain pain down and popped the plug, and while it was draining, I was able to do my oil filter, with no mess or oil soaked armpit hair/shirt sleeve/back of head in puddle of oil.

Plus while I was under there, I noted that this V6 mofo has a cast aluminum oil pan! Quite sturdy construction for a little six holer. I bet it's a stable block under a load too with that rigid oil pan bolted in place!

The underside of my 4Runner is just as nice as the topside of it lol. At least to me, being a mechanic, it is lol. Always nice to see quality engineering that's well thought out in advance..... :bigok:

totally agree! did you use a hose to catch the oil once you remove the oil filter?

in my case, i don't even have to raise the truck since i fit just about right to access the oil pan bolt.

I know what you mean, Ram. It's nice to be able to reach everything without taking the engine off. I do not use the hose for oil to drain out of filter cup, just hold small jar under drain opening for few minutes. Do not drop it though. I placed mine on the engine cover while it had some oil in it. Damn thing fell down onto the skid plate (engine side). Needless to say I got to know skid plates realy well. Removing both plates and cleaning the mess. On the brite side: all skidplates are spotless even on inside:D

I too did a oil change on my T4R for the first time (not a brand new TR4, but first time i did a oil change on a 4runner) but i find it rather annoying on the V8 models that i have to remove the darn skid plate to get to the oil filter. Otherwise it wasnt all too bad.

I agree, I did the 4Runna a few weeks ago and put Mobil 1 EP synth. in there. It was also my first oil change ever in my whole life (I'm only 16) and I enjoyed, except for getting the oil out of the oil filter drain thingy. Oh, if I wanted to replace the filter and not the oil what would I have to do? Sorry, OT.

Wow im impressed, i dont think alot of 16 year olds own a 4runner, most of them at that age around here roll around in riced out Honda's.

Well I don't "own" it, I share it with my mom, so we split the insurance and gas, and I do all the maintenance myself, and keep the receipts of all the parts/fluids I bought. Ain't no way I'm gonna roll in a riced out Honda, I'm saving for my own 4Runner, or if my parent might give the this 4Runner as a graduation present (which would be the bomb), I might just get a sedan.

Also, on the sort of topic of oil filters, I just used a Toyota filter, and not a Mobil 1 for synthetic one. is the Mobil 1 better or worse than the Toyota's? I also have some engine oil left (since I only used 5.5 quarts) so I think ill just add a little after I change the filter.

The Toyota filters are good quality, so is the Mobil 1. One of the top performing filters is the Puralator Pure One and the best "Bang for the Buck".

The Toyota filters only cost like $4 and seem to be good quality, i dont see it worth using the mobil1 @ $10 a pop :( thats too rich for my blood...

The way i see it, the Genuine filters arent any more expensive then your usual crappy Fram, Delco, Bosch, etc, so id much rather stick to OEM.

$10 a pop is cheaper than a couple grand or more in one big shot for a new engine if the cheapie filter fails. I dont like shortblocking an engine because I was cheap on maintenance. Cheaper to shell out a few extra bucks for that extra insurance...... ;):

I wont use anything but a Mobil 1 filter. I'll look for that link about oil filters and see if I can post it. Good read on the different brands and their construction.......

So youre saying a $4 OEM Toyota filter is a cheapy and likely to fail? I think you have things misconstrued.... but whatever floats your boat man, if you want to waste a extra $6 on something you're going to throw away 3-5K miles later go for it. The OEm toyota filters are good quality filters and are meant to last the specified intervals.

I dont think my post said anything about a OEM filter being likely to fail, I do believe I said the cheapies are. Im not the one who has things misconstrued, but thanks for the input.

But yes, even if the OEM filter is a "decent" filter, the Mobil 1 filter is going to be even better quality. Yep, I'll glady throw away six whole dollars to keep my vehicle protected as good as I can. I just throw money away like it's going out of style!!!! :p

You replied to my messaged that clearly states that there is no point buying aftermarket brands, like Fram, Bosch, etc because the OEM ones is pretty much the same price. That was my whole point. I neevr said OEM was best oil filter in the world but it is designed to meet their engine's criterias.

Then you replied with well the "cheapies", which pretty much made it out like the ones i mentioned including the OEM were cheapies. You did not exclude my mention of a OEM Toyota filter.

Also more heavy pleats for better filteration doesnt always mean better, they have to flow a certain amount of (GPM) they were designed for, a thick restrictive pleats will reduce oil flow/pressure. You will have to trade some amount of filteration for better oil flow, same way to compare like a K&N vs stock paper filter. The Toyota filters were design to meet the 2 criterias which is why i buy OEM, that's all.

Everybody has their definition of whats best for them on everything like for example oils, some like Mobil1, some like Amsoil, Castrol, Valvoline, etc etc, I personally use Motul oils in all my cars.

Yeah, i'm it sure is a good read but its nothing new to me and is a little bit irrelevant as they did not really test OEM filters vss aftermarket. I would like to see the differences between a Mobil1 vs the OEM Yoda filter. That site also does not have any real tests to show whats best, its just some guy cutting open filters to observe the innards of each filter, no filteration or flow data. Im not saying all OEM filters are good, as i think some automakers use s**t filters to maximize profits, but Toyota and Nissan in particular seems to use good stuff on their filters.

Im not saying that an OEM filter is not a "safe bet" by any means. By using the one stamped with Toyota's name on it, there's no guesswork involved, it's OEM, it's good. You sleep peaceful at night.

All I'm saying is that your oil filter is like your tires, OEM is fine, but there are better ones out there, and there are worse. I choose to spend the extra for the higher end filters myself, but that's just me. I'm the type of person I like to upgrade the quality of whatever OEM part Im replacing if possible. Oil filter's a prime example, so are brakes.

Am I over cautious? Maybe. But, I've never had an engine fail due to lack of lubrication either.

And the gerator pumps used in ICE's usually do not see a difference in GPM unless there's an extreme case of blockage somewhere, in which case, the flow wont stop, but something's going to break. It's change will be in operation pressure. A gerator pump will only change it's GPM by RPM, not by slightly thicker pleats in an oil filter. Unless the inner and outer rotor have unusually large tolerances and it can bleed back a bit of the pressure that's the only time it may change the flow rate. A thicker pleat on the oil filter will only cause a slight increase in oil pressure reading.
