Did Toyota screw themselves by announcing 2020 TRD Pro too early?

every year model drop in what they are worth. When I bought my 2017 grand sport corvette brand new it was priced at 81k i bought it for 68k only had it 5 months. I put 300 miles on it and when I traded it in I could only get 57k. corvette world sold it for 62k. Boggled my mind how they can sell for 81k at one point and it wasn't even a year old and dropped 20k.

Your math is flawed. They didn't sell an $81K, as you stated they sold a $68K car. You traded and lost $11K. They then resold it $62K, so it only lost $6K. Like so many other American auto makers, they over inflate the sticker and then give the customer rebates, cash incentives, hold back, and special financing to get you to buy. The cars aren't worth the sticker price so they discount then to make the customer think they got this smoking deal. The true value reflects what you got for trade in and what they sold it for. If Vettes regularly sold for that $81K msrp only, then you would have gotten more like $75K when you traded. They murder the value of the car by initially discounting it.

I don't know how this impacts TRD Pro sales or 4Runner sales, but I have to think overall sales volumes will drop at some point. Probably soon.

Industry sales have already peaked, though not due to rising interest rates. Rates have been coming off of late. Basically, this business cycle is very long in the tooth and the formerly pent up demand has been sated.

U.S. Auto Sales Boom Will Finally End In 2019; Surely?

U.S. auto sales fall in February on weak SUV demand

(Reuters) - Automakers on Friday reported a decline in U.S. light vehicle sales for February as demand for SUVs slows after years of rapid growth, pointing to a drop in overall sales in 2019.

Toyota Motor Corp, the No.3 automaker in the United States by volume, reported a 5.2 percent drop in sales to 172,748 vehicles due to declines in its flagship Camry sedan as well as its Tundra pickup trucks and Sienna minivans.

Smaller rival Fiat Chrysler Automobiles NV said sales fell 2 percent to 162,036 vehicles, weighed down by lower demand for its Jeep Compass and Renegade sport utility vehicles.

"The overall industry is starting off slower due in part to weather, the U.S. government shutdown, and concern over tax refunds," Reid Bigland, Fiat Chrysler's U.S. head of sales, said in a statement.

Michelle Krebs, executive analyst at online marketplace Autotrader, said Fiat Chrysler's Compass and Renegade models are typically purchased by more budget-constrained buyers, who might be facing some cash crunch at this time of the year.

Analysts have said that rising interest rates on auto loans could crimp demand this year. Higher interest rates translate into bigger monthly car payments for consumers and could prompt some of them to postpone purchases.

General Motors Co and Ford Motor Co, the top two U.S. automakers, have stopped reporting monthly auto sales numbers.

But website Automotive News estimated that Ford's U.S. light-vehicle sales fell 4.4 percent last month.

Industry consultants J.D. Power and LMC Automotive have forecast U.S. auto sales to dip about 1 percent to 1.29 million vehicles in February.

Japan's Honda Motor Co Ltd reported a 0.4 percent dip in U.S. vehicles sales to 115,159 units, while Nissan Motor Co Ltd's sales plummeted 12 percent to 114,342 units in February.

A poll of economists by Reuters expect U.S. car and light truck sales to fall to 16.80 million units on annualized terms in February, from 17.01 million units a year earlier.

U.S. President Donald Trump's threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on imported cars risks a further hit to vehicle demand and profits for automakers, analysts say.

J.D. Power and LMC Automotive have estimated that tariffs could hit full-year demand by as much as 700,000 units.

I had a deposit on a 2019 voodoo blue waiting until 2020 news before I bought. Ended up going with the 2019. I don't care for the safety features it would have been nice to have blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control only. Coming from an 09 corolla with aux, bluetooth audio is all I need. Might miss the remote start but the dual exhaust is split not a true dual. Still have less than 200 miles on mine and couldn't be happier. Idk how excited I am about army green, call me crazy but I love the Voodoo its up there with the Cement to me.

A lot of you are going to shit yourselves if that 2020 army green msrp is at 50k and then markup is well near 60k. Going to wish you didn't cancel your 2019 order. Also we dont want the 2020 to affect sales now because if it does that makes every year model drop in what they are worth. When I bought my 2017 grand sport corvette brand new it was priced at 81k i bought it for 68k only had it 5 months. I put 300 miles on it and when I traded it in I could only get 57k. corvette world sold it for 62k. The dealership I'm buying it doesn't mark up any of their TRD Pros. The salesman is also my cousin's friend, so I'm not worried at all. They used to work at a different dealership together in the Seattle area which did mark up all TRD Pros $8K. I'm not worried about getting hosed over.

I have been thinking about this subject a lot recently, with the news of the 2020 TRD Pro lineup and upgrades coming to us a couple weeks ago.

Tacoma refresh with tons of tech upgrades, Sequoia add, 4Runner getting TSS, a bigger infotainment screen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. And biggest news IMO, army green coming to the lineup.

Here in SoCal, I have been seeing all these Toyota dealerships trying to sell PROs at MSRP all of a sudden. I can't help but think that they are trying to dump these things as fast as possible because they know people want the army green color and all the upgrades coming throughout the lineup. Funny how Pros used to sell for at least $5k markup (more like $10-15k markup) here in SoCal, all up until the 2020 Pro news got released.

What do you guys think? Did Toyota announce this too early? Will these 19 Pros start sitting everywhere into later this year (even into next year)?

It definitely has an impact. People have been waiting for Toyota Safety Sense and Apple CarPlay. It has always been extremely difficult to land a TRD Pro at my local dealership, especially in the exclusive color. They have always either been pre sold or were gone within in a day if one showed up on the lot. Been like this for years. Fast forward to today....there is a Voodoo blue Pro that has been sitting out on the main display right in the main road for over a month now. They do not charge over MSRP either. I think it’s really a combination of the Voodoo blue perhaps not being as desirable as the Cavalry blue, Cement, Inferno, etc, the significant price hike this year and the fact that next year’s model gets al the tech upgrades.

I can't understand putting off purchasing a truck just because next year the radio screen will be bigger. Maybe a small fraction of buyers are doing what you say, but the majority of people decide they need/want a car and go buy one.

I guess TRDPRO people are different though.

Not sure I agree. Addition of Toyota Safety Sense and Apple CarPlay is a pretty big tech upgrade that people have been waiting for. Assuming that the 2020’s will be on lots in 6 months, I’m sure it is a big factor for those looking to upgrade to the PRO.

Yeah I hate mine too. The fact is whatever touch screen radio you get in your car will be outdated in two years just like your cell phone.

I would pay a premium for a radio delete option since I plan to keep my 4Runner for many years.

I'd love if Toyota would offer kind of a clubsport type package with all the good 4x4 bits but rubber floors, basic no-screen radio, and vinyl seats.

That’s just the point. With Apple CarPlay, you’re system won’t be outdated. Your Nav and apps will always be up to date.

If I were 4runner shopping I'd be more interested in getting a smokin' deal on a 2019 than worry about paying full and beyond price on a 2020. Count me in the crowd however small that crowd is that does not want a big tv screen planted in my dash. I'm glad I did not get that on my 2012 SR5. The ones I have seen are always smeared up with finger grease from someones last big mac. I don't really see anything that enticing in the 2020's.

I ordered a 2019 TRD PRO on 24th December 2018. It's in production and due for delivery late April. I'm not bothered about waiting any longer I want the vehicle so I can kit it out and get outdoors and enjoy it. Every year they will make improvements no matter how slight. You could always wait for the next year and never get one. Or you can get one then winge and be depressed when the new one comes out with more than yours. Its the same in any retail industry. The new model always seems shinier. That's why some people change every year. I can't wait to get mine. I'm not bothered by modern cars with all this crazy safety tech just more to go wrong. The infotainment would have been nice but I can add aftermarket and get appleplay. I even went for Midnight Black so, I am standing by for people to tell me I wasted my money in a PRO if I decide to change the suspension and wheels haha.

I am now on my 6th 4runner trd pro so here's my thoughts. I have flipped every one for a profit or broke even and drove it for free. They make white every year and this is the 2nd year they have made black. Those are a dime a dozen especially since there have been more and more pros added on the road every year that goes by. It's simple supply and demand. Also, the msrp is like 3 or 4k higher now for the 2019's. Kind of hard to ask for the new msrp price plus markups. Cement was my favorite color. I am looking forward to seeing army green!

I don't give two $hits about the size of the screen getting bigger, but having Apple Car Play is huge because Entune blows hard. Push button start isn't a big deal but it's nice and the safety stuff matters to some but not myself.

We've all known that Army Green was going to be the 2020 Pro color for some time now so that announcement wasn't a game changer. Green is my favorite color and I owned a 2001 Tacoma TRD OR in their army green metallic and loved it, that was my very first Toyota, but I think the popularity in the build up to the release of that color is more so because they simply haven't offered a green in this lineup since the 3rd Gen. Most people hate green on vehicles and there aren't a lot produced by any manufacturer for that reason. I think the hype is mostly because of the rarity within the product line of the manufacturer overall and not because people are dying to own a green car. That said, I think it will end up being the best selling color on a Pro of all-time but I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if you see a lot of them on the second hand market within just a few short years after they release it and the new and "must have" cool factor has worn off.

I think we'll see more demand for the Pro now that it's coming with the tech expected on a 40k+ vehicle. I'll be a two Pro household (18 & 20) this fall when green arrives. When I decide to move into an RC-F, it'll be the Cavalry that goes because the spouse values moonroof, safety sense and carplay over her preferred blue color.

My 16' TRD-P is now over 50K miles, and I still love it. I like seeing the upgrades from year to year. REALLY wish the sunroof had been an option in '16. One of the first things I did was ditch the entune and replaced with a Kenwood GPS radio. The Entune radio wasn't all that bad, but Toyota keeping you completely locked out of using the NAV/phone buttons while in motion is total crap! Plus the new radio has CarPlay so I now use WAZE exclusively. I seems to find destinations better than the Garmin in the Kenwood. Hoping to keep this '16 for another 5 years and then I'll buy another new TRDP, this time with a sunroof for sure! Plus, while other dealers in the Chicago metro area were charging $5k dealer adjustments, I shopped around and got mine $2K under MSRP thanks to a work discount.
