DieselToyz only deals in OEM gray market so they say what suits their narrative. Don’t believe me? Read what they have to say about TDI swaps. But I won’t fight you here; I wouldn’t use either an R2.8 or 4BT personally. Why? Because I have no experience with those motors. However, as I mentioned earlier, the BHW is direct injection, super reliable (once BSM/cam are sorted) capable of making gobs of power, and readily available for under $1,000.
The best part? It’s actually legal in all 3rd gens! Unlike every single engine that DieselToys sells, and the 4BT, and the R2.8 in anything newer than 99.
When I had my HDJ81 with the 1HDT motor, I made friends with another forum member who was finishing up a 4BT 80 series. One ride in the HDJ was enough to sour him on every single aspect of his 4BT, and the 1HDT is 30 years old!
The only other option I’d consider *might* be the OM606 and the CJMA. The OM is IDI, so that’s probably out, and the CJMA is still too expensive/complex.
We’ve just read differing reports on the R2.8 is all. And unless one of us wants to pony up the handsome sum for one, it’ll remain hearsay. And the BHW matches the R2.8s power with a simple $300 tune. Add a turbo and nozzles? Game over.
