Diesel Swap

So I want to do a diesel swap with my first gen. Im just tired of getting terrible hp. Problem is that i dont know which diesel engine i should swap for and where to get a conversion kit. Or if its even possible with the 3.0L V6. Is it possible, and if so has anyone done it or what engine should i use and what should i do to the conversion kit?

Conversion kit? Who makes them? The mercedes om617 is a popular swap. Or if you can get a hold a Toyota diesel I'd go for that, but it will be very spendy. Anything is possible if you have the money.
For way cheaper you can throw a 3.4 in it and have lots more power, and you would not have to redo your motor mounts and tranny swap.
 
Ive seen a few people around that make swap kits. I have a truck im trying to sell so im hopefully gonna have around $8000, and I looked into the om617 swap but i think the v6 sits too far forward for that swap
 
sooooo not worth it. i think toyota made a v6 diesel for a while. but most swaps like that cost in upwards of 10,000 and you will never make your money back ever.do a 3.4 swap and call it good about 3 grand at the most and a hell of a lot less work.

It's $8000 for a half cut alone. I think it would be super cool to keep it all 100% toyota. If I won the lottery this is one of the first things I would do. haha

Ya seriously! I know there was a guy who converted his fj 60 to diesel and put dual cases and regularly broke spider gears in Moab with it but he jumped of the crooked river bridge. Would've bought it if I had the chance... But anyways seriously want to check out that shop
 
You might consider going up to BC and finding one(Hilux, 4runner, or the like) used(or crashed) to import into the US for parts. Hopefully you could find a 2.4(2.5) liter with a 3.0 head. Best of luck with it.

BC has better refined diesel so it would crap out with american. And the cost of goiing over there and getting back is way too much. How much more powerful is the 3.4? And would it swap with an 89 v6?

Actually, the fuels in BC are terrible, lower octane and energy ratings, along with higher taxes which is why people are driving south for fuel fill ups. The sulfur content in Diesel fuel is going down due to new regs imposed. Frankly, those early Toyota diesel motors are pretty tough, and could take the current levels of sulfur in the fuel.

I think stock they have close to 200 hp and yes you fs wrap computer add a few wires for sensors and your done as long as its a 5speed to 5speed swap autos are a different ball game

This is not an issue at all, in North America all you are going to find is ULSD. Just use some JP Power "slick diesel" or Howe's anti gel or the million or so other additives to keep your injection pump lubed up and your cetane levels acceptable. Just pour into your tank at every fill up.
Take a look at the Cummins 4BT (loud, cheap and common) or the Mitusbishi 4BDT (pretty common as well) both are quite tall blocks though. For Toyota engines, the only 4 cylinders I like is the 3.4 litre 3B and 13-BT, both would be hard to fit in a 4runner. If I remember this right...the 4 cylinder 1KZ was a JDM offering in the Surf though it is rare and expensive.

Oem diesel

I know where a factory Toyota sits like 5minutes away from my house. I'm sure its not in the best condition but I'm sure somebody would love to rebuild it.
 
I guy up here swears by the VW turbo diesel swap. He's built a bunch for people, but they're not cheap. Stay away from the Yota diesels if power is your main concern. They weren't particularly strong.
 
Don't expect the diesel to make your truck feel more powerful than it is now. The only Toyota diesel I would consider swapping is the 1KD-FTV, but that is more expensive than the rest of the Toyota diesels to choose from. You are better off swapping in a 5VZFE. It is more readily available and will actually feel more powerful when you step on the gas. The motor mounts are already set up if your truck originally had a 3VZE too. You can't really say that you are going to save money on fuel with a diesel either when you look at the cost of the overall swap. It will take some time to actually break even with fuel costs.

I live in Bend Oregon and talked to the guy personally. He quoted me $17k to do the install and he had the half-cut sitting right there.

(i know I'm responding to a 3 year old post, but I figured it's relevant since I've spoken to the guy face to face recently)
