Diff Breathers...What Are They Good For??

In the breather mod you linked to, aren't you just moving
the stock breather valve to a higher location?
Shouldn't you replace the breather valve with a filter?

Yeah, you're right...but it's up to you to add a filter. I did not with my '02 4runner. I think that re-locating the breather is the most important thing.

Absolutely.

And don't forget about extending the breather on the tranny, especially an auto.

I don't mean to belabor the point, but I don't understand your reply. The video that you linked to described how the breather valve results in water being sucked into the diff via the axel seals. Just moving the valve won't change this.

The impression I get is that the breather valve itself is imperfect and alows water to be sucked into the diff - but this wasn't mentioned in the video.

Yes, but by moving it higher, water will have less chance of testing your imperfect valve.
 
Currently the breathers on a stock 4th gen 4Runner are located on the diffs. Crossing any water depths greater than 18-20" could result in water getting sucked into your diffs. Once you move these breathers up to the engine compartment or inside the gas door, you are safe to about 50" at which time your vehicle would probably be lost anyway since the air intake to the engine is lower than that.

Actually, you do not want to go that deep. Don't forget about your alternator. Most of the time, the max depth for most SUVs (if you take out the diffs, tranny) is around 28" to 35", depending on where your alternator is located. Of course, if you have BIG tires, then the alternator is higher off the ground and thus you can go deeper.

In addition, you would need to know where your fuse box is and how high it is. Most of the time, this is located up pretty high, but it is yet another thing to consider. Remember, even though it is high, all it takes is one wave to get into it and you may be screwed...such as when you lose momentum and thus lose the bow wave...and then water floods the engine bay. This may happen if you get pulled from behind (as in rescue attempt). I am sure that i am forgetting some other things. Oh yeah, your doors will likely leak...so, prepare to clean it up afterwards or else mold will kill your interior/electronics. Thus, for all these reasons, even though my G is as "waterproof" as they come for a stock SUV, i won't attempt any water crossings above 2 ft., except in emergency. And if it's muddy water, FORGET ABOUT IT.:D
 
But at least your diffs will be water free!!

I was just kidding Thai... There are so many mods in order to cross water that deep, including pontoons and possibly a giant air bubble... Or maybe that button like they have on the Magic School Bus.
 
is there any need to be concerned about rainwater a/o hose water getting into the gas cap area since it isnt water tight itself?

Well, the cap on the Toyota breather only opens when the differential vents hot air out. Otherwise, it's close. So, this is probably not a problem.

Nice tank Thai! Ive been a reefer;): for a few years myself now, fish tanks are a nice addiction next to offroading being that they are both rather costly to be done right. I currently only have a 5.5g nano-reef going which is basically all I can budget myself but I get to have fun w/ my families tanks.

Thanks again for the breather info, Im doing this hopefully tomorrow or sat, whenever the damn rain stops.
 
well got it done yesterday!
I guess ill be the first to say that I actually thought it was kind of a bitch...... the problem was getting my arm up to the backside of the gas intake grommet to put the hose into my cut hole and feed it thru.
I actually gave up and put a pair of needle nose pliers into the hole from the outside, and managed to get the hose onto one of the needles which made it a LOT easier to grip and rip thru.
I would recommend feeding the tube INto the hole from the outside of the truck as opposed to the inside, this would turn the work into ~10 min as opposed to 20ish. but whatever, it IS a very easy mod, NOT technical, i just could not get the reach and maintain enough dexterity to force 3/8" line thru a 1/2" hole with one hand.... and i dont have huge forearms (6'2 170lb).
Good call, now im gonna go make sure i have enough slack for travel!
