Diff Drop or not?

2+ years with a 3" lift, no diff drop, no aftermarket UCAs, and stock CVs. Alignment is within spec and drives straight as an arrow down the highway, and no uneven tire wear.

Ditto here, except mine has 1.5 years on about a 2-2.5" lift...on 17 year old boots w/ about 138K miles. I figure the boots will tear/wear out and the cv axles will have to be replaced before 200K miles or so.

That's impressive, I mean about the cv's. I certainly haven't had the same experience. My truck is also within positive camber, and drives straight on the highway. But it eats cv boots quickly. My oem cv's were all original with 180k+ miles when they tore after I installed a 2" lift. And I suspect the boots are just cheap on the two sets of reman cv's I've gotten from NAPA.

Its most likely the flimsy materials they use for boots on remanned CVs. I did the boot stretch after I lifted that Gerdo made a thread about. The originals did tear, but after I stretched them out and reattached to the shaft, haven't had any problems.

I do plan on replacing them, but only cause they are almost at 200K. And I will rebuild them and use them as spares just in case.

No one has mentioned the cons about the diff drop that float around here. The shifting of the angle can cause oil to not reach certain parts or something like that. That's not the reason I haven't added a DD, but its something thats been discussed.

Yeah lower quality boots on remand cvs Im sure.

I remember that thread. I think it was Dr. Coffee that started it? But nothing ever came of it. I think it was more just a theoretical problem that he was addressing. No one has demonstrated any real problems in the diff caused by the changed angle from a diff drop. At least not that Ive seen

The rubber boots alone in the toyota kits are FAR superior than the cheap aftermarket ones. People with aftermarket boots will tear with or without the diff drop! :P

Those of you that are NOT running a diff drop and have 3"+ lift, do you guys feel any vibration/grinding in your front end? My research told me that without these diff drops, there will be vibrations.

No vibrations for me. I can drive along the interstate at 65-70 and its smooth.

in 2wd its smooth all the time with and without a diff drop, in awd it vibrates when I accelerate at high speed above 60mph. both with and without the drop.

my '14 has a small amount of high freq vibration at higher speeds under acceleration. However it had that before the lift and is the same with the 3in front lift.

Overall I don't think anything has changed with the lift as far as road handling. The nose dive is a bit less with the coilovers. Everything else as smooth as stock. I still need some new UCAs but the "wandering" is no worse now than when it was stock. With the UCAs I expect the handling over all to actually be fairly improved on the street from the day I bought it. And of course it's much better offroad :D

The vibrations they are talking about could be caused by the increased angle on the cv's, or the front propeller shaft, unfortunately

Apologies for the contentious Zombie thread...

I'm gonna come at this from a different angle (pun intended :jk:).

Is there any disadvantage to installing a diff-drop?

For example could it potentially complicate a skidplate install?

It will change the flange angles. The front drive shaft is a simple u joint based shaft and if the flange angles are off it will cause an oscillation of power.

The rear drive shaft has the double cardon and can handle an offset flange angle better.

If you buy a 20+ year old truck with original CV axles on it and then put a 3” lift on it... your probably going to rip those old boots. You still might even if you install a diff drop.

I don’t like diff drops because I think it’s a bad idea to change the flange angle.

You will kill the pinion bearing of the front diff. Its splash lubricated and will fail prematurely. Stock skidplate will not fit without massaging. Do the boot mod and you'll be fine, or buy lifetime axles from NAPA and replace them every so often :)

Is this speaking from experience. I had nothing like that happen had 378k mi when totaled drop run for last 160k.
A decade ago people were saying that would happen never did, whole lotta wheelin went on in that decade. No problems with power oscillations.

Kits come with spacers to lower rear of skid, I used 3/4" Long 1/2" EMT spacers welded to skid at rear holes longer bolts.
