What's your budget, what are you using the truck for, and which diff is it going in?

Assuming you're locking the rear diff, if you've got the money for an elocker or ARB, do it and don't look back. If you're on a budget and use the truck primarily on pavement, the Spartan is an awesome choice. If it's a trail rig, Lincoln Lock it and save a buck.

should really look at elocker or arb. selectable is the way to go. it may cost less at the start for a spartan but if you dont like it, it will cost you even more now to go to a selectable. save enough for it well worth it.. also look into regearing if you have bigger tires. again save once, pay once, cry once :)

id say i would be doing more on road driving but with the occasional trail ride hear and there. i will be locking the rear and if i get into more intense trail riding ill get a spartan locker for now ill stick with a spartan locker but do you have any elocker?

So many pro's and con's of every system. As said, it so depends on how you intend to use the vehicle. A selectable (air/electric) or auto full locker will give you great hardcore offroad traction, but sadly nothing onroad or fastish trails.

As to airlockers ARB make a tough product, but small issues like seal failure let down the product when you most need it. Automated lockers that lock in due to wheel action just seem to be so dependable in my books, and life saving when the traction conditions change below you unbeknowing and quite often you don't have time to engage an air locker. Fully locked vehicles aren't a pleasant thing to steer, so you do find you are locking and unlocking alot and that gets annoying at times if you are doing a long trail.

For me, my vehicle is my daily drive and I love how a limited slip diff gives great traction on wet and gravel roads... and I'm now up to my second Detroit Trutrac in the rear. It offers improved offroad traction ( no where near a full locker ) and onroad traction (wet/gravel surfaces).

If I had unlimited budget and if was available I'd get a Eaton electric LSD/locker combo and get best of both worlds - not sure if available anymore.

Just my thoughts anyway.

I just dropped a spartan in my truck, rides really nice and easy installation. Maybe 5 hour job head scratching and thumb-up-assing included. The way I look at it is through Murphy's law, the less parts to malfunction the better

I'm with Footofgod on this. Detroit and the Yukon Grizzly locker are some of the strongest and most reliable lockers on the market IMO. I personally run a Detroit locker and love it. Once you learn how they feel on the road they are no problem.
Selectable lockers are way cool, but there is way more to fail on them as Robmills72 has mentioned.

Several of us on here also use a Yukon Grizzly locker (same as a Detroit). Very happy with it.

Add me to the list of Grizzly owners.

I've had one locking the rear for nearly a year, and it's performed flawlessly. A great mod for those on a budget, and an awesome mod for off road!

:humble:

I'll eventually install a selectable in the front, but right now I just have the Spartan in the rear. I daily drive year-round and hit moderately hard trails, and it's held up fine. If you see yourself putting monster power under the hood or going to 35" or bigger tires, you might want to skip the lunchbox and look into the Detroit or Grizzly lockers. You need to know how to set up a diff to install them or pay somebody to do it for you, but they are stronger than the lunchbox style (Spartan, Aussie, etc).

Well my 4runner has ARBs front and rear. Came with them when I purchased the truck and they work grreat. The pickup I have has an aussie front and an ARB rear and I friggen love it. I prefer a selectable in the rear for on road driving. The front has manual hubs so I can unlock it manually.

save your money and get a selectable.

even for trail only use, being able to unlock the rear is great if you're on any kind of side hill with snow/ice/mud. being locked in the rear, it will slide to the downhill side. most often, being unlocked there will allow you to stay straight.

it will cost more upfront, but its worth it.

As stated by KidVermicious what's your budget? If you are on a budget I'd say the spartan is a good choice. I don't have personal experience with one but from what I read on here they are a good quality lunchbox locker.

Now if you have the money I would go the selectable route. I have front/rear ARB on my rig and love them. Great street manners and awesome off road traction when locked up... all at the flip of a switch.

I'm on a budget but not going to do a hard core build I'm mostly going to keep her stock with a few mods like 2 or 3 inch lift and if i get a 22r-e ill do some miner engine mods like cam shaft decent exhaust better intake stuff like that just to get a little more hp and better performance since i love to drive but thats another discussion ill start. from what everyone in saying ill get a Spartan for the rear and some time later on ill get a elocker for the front like KidVermicious.

Has anyone had any experience with these lockers (sorry to interrupt)... I've been looking into these for our 92 4runner and thy seem to be fairly budget friendly, simply and effective...

assuming its made with decent steel, it should be fine.
looks like every other Toyota lunchbox locker out there.

^^ Yup.

What is the history of LOKKA?
LOKKA has been manufactured in Australia since the late 1990’s and has been sold globally under its own brand name or re-branded for local resellers.
From 2003 to 2012 it was best known in North America under the brand name Aussie Locker™

They've come down in price though. They used to cost more than the Spartan, didn't they?

Umm your from Australia and you aren't going to use an ARB? Isn't that against the law down there?

LOL..... As good as ARB stuff is, it is quite expensive. My thinking as far as the LOKKA v's ARB locked diffs goes, I'm not really keen on fitting a compressor to run them. Plus the LOKKA items cost half as much. They may not be as good but from the reading, videos and reviews I've done and seen, they seem like the best option for me.

Meh, ARB, LOKKA.... whatever gives me the best bang for buck.
