Is there anyway of telling what gear ratio is in a diff? Are there any stamps on the diff? I'm shopping around for 4.88s there's a few with the diffs off but is there anyway of actually telling what's in it?

Thanks for the help everyone.

Count the teeth. There's pinion colors, but they aren't reliable. If the diff is still in the truck, you can do the spin and count method. Or look it up by the axle code on the vin tag, but that's not 100% either. Best way is to count the teeth.

the best way is to count the teeth. if the 3rds are already out, this is easy to do.

if you are buying just a 3rd member, it will be out anyway...

if you are buying a complete rear end, have them pull the 3rd so you can inspect it. if they aren't willing to do that(or let you do it) move on.

edit: kid beat me to it! lol
