Differential replacement

Are there any vehicles out there with lower gearing that i can swap my rear diff out for or is the only way to go new?

if its 4wd you will need to change the front diff also.if you had the 31inch tire option i think 4.56-1 is the lowest they came with i could be wrong

I'd like to go around 5.29 ratio, but iv'e been told i will need to replace both my differntials, is there another vehicle out there i can just take the differential from to get a lower ratio, or do i need to get detroit lockers or airlockers.

toyotas make there own so gears will not fit unless there made for
it.finding used maybe an option but could be hard to find.

I do seem to recall there was a year that used 4.88's but they haven't used anything higher than 4.56 in the last 20 years or so.

I'm not opposed to buying new, the money doesn't really matter, i'm just nto sure where to aqquire the parts, are there any 4x4 toyota sites i can purchase them from or is a dealership the way to go?

The best deal on 3rd's that I've seen are the ones they sell over at http://www.trail-gear.com/toy-diffs.html .

You can get a brand new V6 3rd with 5.29 or 4.88 gears and a Detroit soft-locker installed in it for $1199.

That sounds like a lot, but take your own 3rd member and price gears, install kit, a locker, and the labor to have it installed and you'll be at that amount or higher, and then there's the old "Yes but can you trust them..." routine. I have a buddy that bought one of those for his truck and he's very satisfied.

Other than that, if you don't have a good shop locally, there's a guy named "Zuk" that frequents several forums I read that does gears in his garage. His reputation is flawless and he's very respected. Here's his web page:

No, the lowest stock ratio from Toyota was 4.88, it would be rather hard to find . If you want anything lower (5.29 or 5.71) you'll have to go aftermarket.

Gears are around $250 a set, $100 for the bearing kit, and $150-200 for labor (assuming you pull the diff and carry it in to the shop). And yes, you need to do the front and rear (unless you don't plan on ever using 4WD.
