Dino vs. Synthetic in diff. Interesting article

Doing some research on gear lube, I came across this article from East Coast Gear:

https://eastcoastgearsupply.com/files/PDF Files/ecgs-gear-oil-recommendation1.pdf

What are you guys running in your diffs and transfer case?

Redline is what I use. If I did more water crossings I’d probably stick with a high quality cheaper dino oil.

That comment about synthetic gear oils thinning out more at high temperatures is baloney. That is not how viscosity index works.

I would search for some more scientific literature and take ECGS’s article with a grain of salt.

I used Amsoil 75w-110 in the rear and Mobil Delvac 75w-90 for the transfer case and front diff. Never had a problem with using any of them.

The best off the shelf is probably Mobil 1 IMHO.

ECGS is entitled to their opinion.

Mobil Delvac synthetic is used in heavy duty applications; I have used the 75w-90 synthetic grade since 2010 with good results. Less than $50 for a gallon of it on Zoro I believe.

you can use either so long as you are changing oils at the recommended intervals. synthetic tend to be better because of their tendency not to oxidize or bond with oxygen in sealed systems. I use mobil 1 synthetic in the front and transfercase but use dino valvoline 80w90 that I buy at discount by the case, because I replace it frequently or after water crossings etc. I think ecgs are pros and know their stuff so their advice carries more weight but" to each it's own".

I use conventional in the rear diff because it's cheaper and I feel like it's less likey to leak through the seals. The shop that pressed mine together botched one side a bit and I dont fully trust the seal.

Synthetic in the front because they dont seem to even sell conventional 75w90 at the store. If I could easily buy gallon jugs of conventional 75w90 i'd just use that in everything. It's way faster and easier with a gallon jug and pump.
