That front bumper came out looking sweet...That's the thing about making your own, you can customize it anyway you like and any changes or additions can be done accordingly..u got my respect for being a DIY'er.

Goodluck on the rear..Seeing as how the front turned out, i'm sure the rear bumper will be as equally awesome.:yo:

Rear bumper build has begun!

First thing first , remove the bumper and come up with some ideas...

I remembered that I had a 12ft long 2x6 1/4" wall tube behind my house that's been there for a while so I decided to you use that to keep the cost down.Only downside is that It had been outside for a few years now so I definately need to whip out the wire wheel on it!

The bumper will consist of..
Main beam (2x6 1/4" thick)
Side wings will be a mix of 1/4 and 1/8 thick steel
Receiver
2x tow points
tire carrier held by a 1 inch thick grade 8 bolt in a 1.5 inch dom tube with 2 oil impregnated bushings in a double shear.
Hi-lift mount
1x gas jug hold
and.....

The main beam will also be my air tank for my on board air!(mv-50 compressor)

This bumper will have a very high clearance!

I don t trust single shear spindles so I went with this big guy which will be held in a double shear set-up.The other is a 1/2 inch bolt!

The build was going along pretty well till both tow hook bolt heads snapped off clean...Great now I have to drill the full length of 2 bolts out..

Got those two snapped bolts off by welding nuts on them.

My main goal for this bumper was to keep it as high off the ground as possible and safe!So I went with a double shear design on both sides.

3/16 wall tube with two bronze oilite bushings and a 1" grade 8 bolt.

Cut off the corners to give it some angle

Other side(safety pin hole)

The safety pin is 5/8s thick so it should be good as a back up.I'll also have a thick gauge wire acting as a safety strap on the pivot side.

Not to bad for a flux core

Unfortunately I forgot to make some space dedicated for my two tow points so I'll just have to weld on the receiver and use that as my tow/recovery point.

I used 3/16 wall for that swingout cross tube which is really overkill and heavy!Now im thinking of stepping down to 1/8 but safety is my biggest concern.

ya it does have very high clearance. That little corner you see under the main beam is going to be chopped off.

Im surprised how well the 7.5 wraps took the weight.

I'm trying to incorporate a swingout on my addicted rear bumper but I can't figure out a way to use the type with roller bearings that will maintain structural intergrity and fit like I need it to.

Its really not bad, I like that there's a little resistance so it doesn't swing out easily.

Have any of you noticed how much the frame on our 4runners flex?I opened the swingout and sat/bounced on it and I noticed that the frame was flexing and not my bumper.

So I was able to pretty much finish installing everything on the front bumper and complete the rear.

Here are a few pictures for you guys.

Installed my winch + rigid style lights in the bumper+led turn signals.

Now the rear.If anybody is looking to build a swingout I really suggest going simple and safe with a double shear design + 1" bolt + (2) Bronze oilite bushings!It swings out smoothly without any issue and its tough.I can open up the swingarm and bounce on it without any issues.

The reverse lights on the runner don't do much when you're trying to see back there so i'll have to figure out how to incorporate some led reverse lights on there.

Overall I'm happy with the bumper.Its built tough and it serves it purpose while keeping it simple.(backed into a massive concrete post sort of on purpose and the the only damage was flaked off paint)

Next up are under belly skids and sliders!

Looks great! I don't see any damage from the concrete post....can you see much out the rear window with the tire there? build me some sliders too! :hungry:
