Do any V6 owners run in 4HI Full Time?

A few summary facts, factoids, and opinions for this thread.

(1) 4hi in V6 is virtually identical to 4hi in V8 which runs that way permanently. Transfer cases are virtually identical.

(2) There's no chance the mpg difference between 4hi and 2wd is 1 to 2 mpg. This becomes immediately obvious when comparing mpg for various trims. Mpg hit for awd should be in the general vicinity of 1/4 mpg. -- http://www.toyota-4runner.org/1644212-post9.html

(3) Running in 4hi in the V6 confers some advantages. One can forget about the 10 miles per month owners manual 4wd recommendation. Exercising the diff lock is dead simple and can be done anytime while driving straight. Exercising 4lo is made simpler, too. Considering how important these things are, anything that contributes to their getting done more often seems valuable.

(4) Tire wear is likely more evenly distributed, too.

(5) Running in 4hi takes advantage of the awesomeness that is the Torsen center diff. This is a pretty unique vehicle. Seems a shame not to take advantage of that uniqueness at least semi-regularly.

So... Really it would just be crazy not to, especially given the cost to repair the actuator if that is going bad. I think I'll leave it in 4hi until Spring and see how it goes. :becky:

Certainly can't make it worse, I also find mine feels more "solid" in the steering when it's in 4hi all the time, especially on the freeway and on winding mountain passes, of course the added traction is a great perk as well. I wouldn't give up on it though, changing the t-case oil should help, it certainly can't make it worse and if you're running in 4hi all winter it's important to make sure that stuff is fresh.

It's a very simple job you can do in the driveway in about 30minutes with only about 1.5qt of 75w90 synthetic (I used Valvoline SynPower last time), a 24(?)mm, and a couple of new plug gaskets. I didn't need a pump as I was able to finagle the bottles up there just fine and fill it until it dribbled out, but you might need a fluid transfer/bottle pump.

Ya seriously. Just because someone is in 4wd doesn't mean that they need to go only 40mph. We have some pretty gnarly winters up here and everyone goes the same speed on the highway as they do during the summer. Being in 4wd is just an extra capability.

Stop saying things you clearly know nothing about.

When it becomes -30F in the winter here in Canada I still need to travel places and 40MPH would get me run off the road because our highways still run year round. Why wouldn't I want more traction?

Damn why don't yall calm down some. I'll clear up my post some.. In the south where I'm from when you actually NEED 4hi going that fast is reckless. We don't get brutal winters and when we do people think they can put it in 4wd and tear through anything and then they ride asses and have huge wrecks like what happened last winter. I'm speaking of going off of the concrete in the woods and windy dirt roads. completely different ball park of what you're talking about. and of course I'm still probably wrong to some people but it's an opinion on a forum

Another question I guess I misunderstood, I realize the v8s are all the time 4wd hi but from having an older land cruiser I was under the impression the an all the time 4wd and and regular that shifts from 2hi-2lo-4hi were set up differently in the transfer case so that would make it irrelevant that v8s can as fast as they do in 4hi. Also this isn't directed towards you but in general if you are driving that fast nobody need to go that fast anyways. If someone really needs 4hi than over 40 is just being careless

where in that post did I mention driving on a highway at 60 is careless? I just said to clear it up I was talking about going off of the concrete and on dirt roads and in the woods that fast was careless.

I guess I just got confused because my post never mentioned anything about doing 60+ mph off-road through the woods. Actually no one in this entire thread ever mentioned anything about doing 60+ mph through the woods. That wasn't even a question until you changed your argument to that.

I am from Alabama and I am thinking of actually going offroad where if you're going past speeds of 60 then you don't even need 4hi(But in case you misunderstand again: That is my opinion that is not me stating a fact). I'm not talking about if you want to ride in 4hi for fun on the interstate like you do it's dangerous, I was talking about a scenario that actually requires 4wd-which in that case I should've inferred I meant the woods. If I was supposed to have looked at what region he was from and how his definition could differ from mine then sorry, I didn't

Yes I gave a really obvious statement which was dumb I just didn't realize it and I understand my 4Runner but really I just understand in regards to my needs. I apologize for not paying attention to the region and realizing other uses people have so I'll focus next time it just keep my mouth shut. Sorry again
