Do I have a bad Cat or Sensor? * UPDATE

In a previous thread I mentioned that my TRAC & VSC lights come on, stay on for a day, a week or sometimes longer then turn off on their own. There is no set pattern.
I bought a OBDLink LX scan tool and have used it for a couple of days now.
When I run the diagnostics i get the P0430 & P0012 codes.
After driving for about an hour or so I did a "freeze Frame" of the Diagnostic Report. In the "Mode $06 - On-Board Monitoring" section everything shows as "Pass"
I have all the other data as well, but I don't know what would be helpful and what wouldn't.
Please let me know what info is needed and I will post it.

430 is cat efficiency, 012 is cam timing. If the 012 is a "real" code, I'd bet it is the cause of the 430 as well - an overly retarded cam timing issue will surely effect what the 02 sensor sees.

Agreed with the above statement.. start with cam position sensor. check the wires coming out by valve cover at the end of the cams make sure they arent frayed.

yeah you should probably google it.. I have the v8.. and its where i said it was. on the end of the cams by the valve covers towards the front of the car. I do not know exact location on the v6 but i assume its similar.

What kind of engine oil are you running in the vehicle if you don't mind me asking?

P0430 [Bank 2 Catalyst Inefficiency]
P0012 [Bank 1 "A" Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarded]

The P0012 may not be directly related to the P0430 as they are issues in two separate bank.

You didn't really specify which engine you have...

2GR-FE Camshaft Position Sensors are located near the front of the engine and are in the valley on the timing cover.

Apparently there is only one Camshaft Position sensor for the 2UZ-FE and it is located on Bank 1 under the camshaft gear itself, there should be a rubber grommet with a wire sticking out of that.

I have the V6 with 180K miles. I bought it used in 2011 with with 128K, and have had no major repairs or issues.
I use Mobil 1 10-30 & change the oil every 6K & the filter (Fram PH3614) every 3K.
I am currently getting 20-21 mpg calculated at fill up.

I feel your 4runner is doing great, myself i would not spend money for a new sensor unless you notice a big drop in gas milage. Those check engine lights and their many bad sensor codes, have been sending many of all brands to their service stealer Depts. and just really do nothing but drain your pocket book.
I find many time they come on and later go off by them selves. I think their set to change with the change in Temp of the cat.
I have the light on my auto for years and still it is starting and running great and gas milage is the same as when the light was off.
