Do i need a diff drop?

A diff drop is only necessary if you are lifting over 2". I have a diff drop on mine with a 1" lift, but the only reason is because I didn't save my old bolts so I couldn't take it off when I took my lift off. The angles are actually better with the 1" lift and driff drop than they were before I lifted.

im a new 4runner owner, I love my truck and its already getting addicting to do stuff to it, I bought the 5100 series struts for the front but if I put it on the higher setting of lift wont I need the diff drop?

Mine is 3" in front. My Daily Driver. No diff drop, off road regularly on rocks with lots of articulation. No problems. Some people say it causes a bad angle on front diff housing. You are going to get arguments for both. Best thing to do is google search, read and make decision that makes sense to you.

oh, nothing against you man. I said that b/c there's been a long battle (probably dating back to the early 1900's
) whether or not diff drop is needed in any application.Generally, people don't use them unless they're going up to 3" of lift. If you only bought the struts and put them on stock coils, even at the highest setting I wouldn't worry bout a diff drop.

Can you expand on this a bit? I have a 4th gen, but am considering removing my diff drop. I'm not sure how much it actually dropped at the axles (maybe 3/8"), but I had to add spacers to the front mounting points of my skid plate due to interference.

They don't make that much of a difference, they merely pivot the differential as apposed to "dropping it"
When you pivot it like that the pinion bearings can get oil starved, causing them to wear out more quickly

Ah... that makes sense! My CV angles aren't bad at all with only about 2.5" of lift. I'll be removing my kit.

I have the 3" ome lift up front without the diff drop. I haven't broken a CV even running 35's... yet anyway I'm waiting for that day. In reality the CV angles with a 3" lift on 4runners aren't bad. When I had my blazer and the torsion bars cranked all the way up my CV angles were a lot worse.
