In the same catagory as stuffing a pair of socks down your trousers. Might attract some but the performance does not back it up. The T4R is an awsome machine on it's own without advertising. ' Don't need a pair of socks... To each his own...

It would be all labor for me(I work for an aluminum company) I figured some cool fresh air would help with the supercharger. TRD doesn't reccomend any aftermarket cold air intakes so I thought the scoop feeding the factory air box would be an alternative.
Where did you mount your dual by-pass filter set up? Were you able to keep the filters vertical? Do you have any pictures of it?

Yes,alot of cars use things just for aesthetics and scoops do attract buyers and it's what makes a SE identifiable from afar.
Most people don't even know it's not functionable and that's actual owners and people with scoop envy.

Yes in the instructions that came with my TRD supercharger, it clearly states that the use of cold air intakes voids the warranty. And my guess about the insulation that is not in the area under the hood scoop is because Toyota uses that scoop for the intercooler on diesel versions of the 4Runner in other countries.
I'm confused.
I had thought that the scoop was an air intake as the picture on page 3 or so indicated. Is that not the case from the factory? If the engine is getting air from the scoop as it looks like it is in the picture, then the scoop is completely functional. It's allowing the engine to pull air from outside rather than from under the hood, which will help performance (a bit) in hot weather since you're not pulling blazing hot air from the engine compartment...basically a CAI.
I wouldn't like a completely nonfunctional scoop, but as long as it's working as a CAI I think it both looks good and adds to the car in a real way.

The factory scoop is solely for looks but there is a functionable version on the deisel Runners.
There is minimal benefit to making it functional and wouldn't be realized in everyday driving performance even on a hot day.
I don't want to hack mine up to let more air in since with air you'll also suck in alot of road dirt,leaves,small pebbles and dust that will collect in the engine bay over time and a dirty engine will cancel out any gains you would get from fresh air over the engine which are negligible to begin with.

I agree with that completely. I was thinking water could be a problem too, and definitely dirt when off road.
Does anyone know if an insulation panel exists to cover this spot, and if so would it provide any benefit other than protecting, and keeping in place the wiper fluid hose.

Really! I find that very interesting, especially since the area that the stock air box pulls from is a 3" hole in the wheel well. Which leeds me to believe that the hole in the factory scoop when cut out should be capable of flowing plenty of air through it? Have you had your runner in a wind tunnel to test this?

I do agree you wouldn't want just the scoop trying to feed your engine since the pressure going over the hood is compeletely different than the pressure of the area feeding your stock intake inlet. The engine doesn't ingest enough air to create a pressurized system (like a forced induction motor can) and the results wouldn't show on a dyno anyway.
The work involved to seal the scoop off would be kinda rediculous for the minimal gain you'd see on a naturally aspirated motor but it would be interesting to see if somebody was to go through all the trouble.
You wouldn't need a wind tunnel to test the theory of the scoop working since Toyota didn't design the hood to grab air and force it into a scoop so wind tunnel results probably would reveal that the scoop is what it is - a factory showpiece.

i just wanna say i think the scoop was one of the reasons to buy my runner. i use to drive a couple rice rockets.(go figure)
well, the main reason i cut mine is when ever i would go play in the mud/dirt their would be gunk stuck in there. I cut it and now it is cleanable. I have a black truck and some flat black /brown scoop plug looked kinda re****ed. It also was another area that was prone to drip after drying my black truck.
these are more then enough reasons for me. adn the fj guys got some engine temp drops of 30 deg f

I have a black truck and some flat black /brown scoop plug looked kinda re****ed. It also was another area that was prone to drip after drying my black truck.
