Do you like the non-functioning hood scoop?

I read that thread and there's still no proof the scoop mod does anything;it's all specualtion on making HP with ideal conditions.

One thing is for sure the mod won't hinder performance so it's not a bad mod but for me personally it's not worth the trouble for the questionable gain but it's like the deckplate mod,you are getting some kind of gain but you probably won't notice it.

I just use a high pressure spray to clean mine out and it's no problem. I keep my engine pretty clean and shiney so I don't want an open scoop to deposit crap all over my nice engine.

If you put your runner in a wind tunnel you would see that there is not enough air passing over the hood for the hood scoop to be adequetly functional. there would not be enough cfm going in the scoop. The gas motor would be starved of air and would run rich. There would not be enough air in the air fuel mixture.

I disagree. Even on a so-called "Ram Air" set up, the air is sucked into the engine, not forced in as many people believe.

Think about how air enters the 4Runner engine now. It doesn't run rich because of a lack of air, even from the stock airbox and filter. There's virtually no air "passing over" the air intake now, so what makes you think that there would have to be enough air passing over the scoop if it were modified to be the air intake point?

I disagree as well. The point is to pull cooler air from outside the engine bay, not to try and force air into the engine.

Thanks for the support guys! I will still try to make mine functional. I plan on installing a flapper too, so it can be closed in foul weather and muddy conditions.

the only downfall of the scoop is cleaing it adn it blocks an inch of the front view.

there is no harm that could be done by cutting it the scoop. it is, on the most part cosmetic. if there was a drain hole i probably wouldn't of cut mine.

i dont see it hurting anything in anyway. i see it helping a tad bit. But, really how much did the iridium plugs,exhaust adn k&n fipk help. they each helped a little bit to make a difference,

if i was worried about ram air i would run a safari snorkel with a giant piece of tupperware on the end. But, that wouldnt look as good as a hood scoop...... lol

car and driver writes some re****ed reviews. when ever a new model or body change comes out it says its the car of the year. then the year after it gets its real review and its normally nothing like the first one. Even nothing new came out or anything really changed.

Every February driving east on I40 to work in the morning the sun is at a particular angle that results in the glare hitting the scoop and being reflected straight into my eyes. This does not occur any where else on the hood because it angles away from the windshield. Its pretty dangerous and there's no way around it, except maybe leaving before sunrise..........,mmm, no maybe later!

Anyone else have this issue?

I don't have that issue exactly, but similar occasionally. Go get a pair of polarized sunglasses.

On sunny days sunlight will always be being reflected into your face since you are constantly changing angles to the sun so at different angles the sun would be reflecting of the hood around the scoop.

I think you are looking too hard for a fault with the scoop but I'm sure you can find a non-scoop owner willing to trade in a heartbeat.

I love the hood scoop. Who cares if it works or not it looks cool. I have never had a problem with the reflection coming off the hood scoop or it causing a blind spot.

To tell you the truth, the scoop was the only reason I chose a Sport Edition, and never even considered either of the others. It was back before I knew all of the other variables such as Xreas.

I've been a 4runner owner for less then a month and the Hood scoop is one of the main reasons that i chose the sport edition.

The dealership made it too easy for me. Almost the same car but with small differences. Pre-owned of course. If i had the money for a new one i would have the privilege of choosing all my options.

It was a lot of small nit-picking and i pretty much knew after my short test drives what car i wanted. My Sister was with me and just took away and small doubts that i may have had. She was all for the Sport edition.

Everything that the Sport edition was missing will be added with after market stuff. The same would be too difficult to do with the limited.

Its cheaper to add a Sony In-dash navigation and a carbon fiber dash kit to the Sport edition then it would be to add Sunroof and Hood scoop to the Limited.

In vehicle design, form should follow function.

A non-functional scoop on the hood that impairs visibility and increases aerodynamic drag is ridiculous. It's acceptable as an aftermarket ripoff, but not OEM.

They should spend these extra pennies illuminating the power window buttons on the doors.

lovvve it. it gives my 4runner a more aggressive styling/look, it's unique to a suv, and there's just something about looking over the hood with that hump that just turns me on! I also love the other standard features that came with my sport: bigger brakes, the styling of the wheels, spoiler, heated mirrors, x-reas suspension, tubular roof rack and side step bars --which I also love the look of in comparison to the sidesteps on standard SR5s and Limiteds, etc. etc. I love my yota!

Just having a Sport Edition means your DIFFERENT than any other SUV. All the sr5 and limited's cant say that :biggrin2: I love the hood scoop and it is the best feature on the SE. Not to mention the tube steps instead of the running boards So i think the only people who dont like the hood scoop just dont want to be DIFFERENT and original. Long live the SE :awais:

Different? I see more SEs around here than Limiteds. Having the SE in the 3rd gens was not so common but now they're everywhere.
