Do you like the non-functioning hood scoop?

Different? I see more SEs around here than Limiteds. Having the SE in the 3rd gens was not so common but now they're everywhere.

Really? I live in Greenwood Village and all I see are sr5's and limiteds. Today i only saw two SE with a lot more sr5's

Before buying the truck I wondered if the scoop was functional and honestly was not disappointed when I learned it was not. In my opinion it just makes the truck more aesthetically pleasing. I just think it gives the sloping nose that little extra something that it needs. When I first showed my wife the 4 Runner she was not impressed with it's looks until I showed her the Sport and Urban Runner. Than she was impressed and ready to jump on board with the purchase. I also feel the hood scoop gives the Tacoma what it needs to go from boring to standing out from the crowd. Just my .02.

The scoop's purpose is supplying air to the intercooler.

Putting the scoop on a vehicle that doesn't need it is an insult to the customer's intelligence, since it affects vissibility and aerodynamics.

I wouln't buy a T4R that includes the hood without needing it.

As a matter of fact, it's not even the only way to supply air to the intercooler, since the Toyota Prado uses the same intercooled turbodiesel engine as my 4Runner, but without the scoop.

Being a subaru owner myself I totally agree with the above statement. But I also unsderstand the statement about looking tough :

If you put your runner in a wind tunnel you would see that there is not enough air passing over the hood for the hood scoop to be adequetly functional. there would not be enough cfm going in the scoop. The gas motor would be starved of air and would run rich. There would not be enough air in the air fuel mixture. The scoop is adequet for an intercooler because it does not require high cfm to cool the intercooler for a super charger or turbo.

I know this is an old post, but I found it interesting. See, the thing is that air enters a naturally aspirated engine under atmospheric pressure, not by suction nor a forced ram-air effect. Therefore, it is impossible for a functional scoop to cause the air/fuel mixture to be too rich. In other words, the engine will still get all the amount of air it needs for a proper air/fuel ratio, even if a functional scoop were turned around backwards.

It has no effect on visibility unless you miss that inch of view and the arodynamic effect is very minimal and compared to a non-scooped there is no diff in mileage or probably even top end since the top end is only 120mph anyway.

Fake scoops are everywhere from the factory but at least Toyota did a good job of making their looks real. It's one of a the few ricey things I like.

It's one of the few things that makes it different among the throng of 4Runners in the US even tho' on 4th gens the uniqueness is gone since SE's are everywhere around here.

Now,explain how the scoop hampers visibilty,please.

Your scoop is blocking that 1-inch patch of ice in front of your 4Runner. Can't you see it, man? If you didn't have a scoop on your hood, you'd be able to see it and avoid it....LOL

Let's get back on the discussed subject here people. I happen to love the hood scoop, and Asians. Hell, I love everyone. If you can't see over the hood scoop, you shouldn't have purchased that model after you test drove it. I think it's the selling point on the truck, and I would buy another on in a heartbeat.

No there isn't and there wouldn't be enough air entering the scoop to be a benefit if you were to open it up.

I love the hood scoop...its just damn sexy. However, I'm in a automotive tech class, just a beginner class but its a pre-req to get into the degree program at the local JC. I'm just taking it to learn though. Anyway, we were doing an underhood inspection the other day... and there are a lot of guys who know what the hell they are doing (or possibly...just talkin' the talk). And I thought at the time as everybody was critiquing others' ride, "I'm damn happy I don't have a fake hood scoop".

Well...why are you happy about it? The only real world negative that is noticeable about scooped runners is some people make fun of their non-funtionability. It has no noticeable diff between a non-scooped Runner.

I just didn't feel like getting ripped on. But, yeah, I'd stop (at least I'm pretty sure I would) just short of prostituting myself to trade an 03-05 runner for their scooped hood.

Even tho' I left my drag racing days behind me a few years ago I still hang with that crowd and I've never even had my fake scoop mentioned once from the car crowd;it is just a 4Runner and not trying to pretend it's something it's not which is different than somebody slapping a fake scoop or wings and stickers on a Camry and racing around.

Plus Toyota did a good job with making the faux scoop look good
