Does anybody have OnStar?

OnStar has come out with a new universal product that you can put in any vehicle, called OnStar FMV (for my vehicle). My wife got me this for Christmas thinking it would be great for travel and safety as I am gone a lot. Sounds cool, but then I looked up the subscriptions........holy crap! Then I thought maybe I could just instal it and enjoy the blue tooth cell phone function without a subscription. OnStar claims that can't be done. Now what their satellites have to do with a blue tooth connection in my vehicle, I have no idea. That's just dumb. So I'm looking for some experience out there. Since its aftermarket, it can't unlock my doors, but it does have personal nav guidance, blue tooth, impact detection and will call 911, and theft tracking. I can see where it might be handy, but want to hear from any of you who might have the service. Thanks!!!

I don't know anyone that kept it after their complementary subscription ran out. It is one of those things.... What level of "bubble wrap" are you OK with rolling around the world in?

Having done a ton of travel before Cell Phones; I think cell phones are more than needed and often leave it at home to get away.

There are two sides of the scale. Risk taker and Risk averse. About 10% of the population is on either extreme, with everyone else somewhere in the middle.

The economy ROLLS with people buying goods. Onstar needs financial support. If you like their product, go for it. As a product it is in a league of its own. Seriously. On GM cars, they can unlock your car. Turn it off. Locate it. Detect air bag deployment.

BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTT. All that info. Big Brother....

Here's a local story which happened a couple weeks ago with On Star

A lady was rear ended from behind at a stop sign,On Star calls the lady about the collision. The woman replied it was minimal damage and the two involved were exchanging info and that 911 had already been called, both drivers involved became tired of waiting for the police to show up for the fender bender and both left the scene.
About 20 minutes later the police call to talk to the woman w/On Star that was rear ended and had called 911,the police stated they needed to talk to her,she explained both drivers exchanged info and that she was turning it over to her insurance co.,,and that she was too busy to talk with them the (police).

So this woman went about running her errands and came out of one her stops, her car was surrounded by 5 squad cars LOL...On Star tracked the Police to their customer Hahaha where she was charged for leaving the scene of a accident!! :)

For me I would say No to On Star....I don't want to be tracked by Big Brother

I think it's a cool gadget, but probably only as a factory system. I don't know that I'd pay for the small offerings you can get as an aftermarket deal.

Friends of mine have it on his girlfriends Sierra, before Christmas she was on an isolated road and slid off the road into the ditch. No damage/injuries but she was stuck in the middle of nowhere travelling alone. She tried calling with her cell but reception wasn't good enough, only words she was able to get out to my buddy were "I hit the ditch...." and got cut off. Needless to say, without knowing any details my buddy was freaking at that point not knowing if she was alright or anything. She contacted onstar, they checked that she was ok, contacted a tow truck, police contacted her to check that she was ok and everything, asked if she needed medical attention but she was all good, just stuck out in the boonies.

My buddy then contacted onstar himself, he didn't even have to say who he was (I'm guessing they used call display to figure out that he was registered as a contact) and they assured him all was good and help was on it's way and she was fine.

Next thing you know she's back on the road and finally got to cell service again to check in with everyone.

I don't know subscription costs but at a time like that it would be worth every penny.
