Does anyone else get this ?

This brown rusty residue returns on a daily basis. Is it from rust inside my rad or heater core ? and why would it always collect on the cap ? The overflow tank is clean.
Pls don't tell me it's the HG melting away ?

Thats what i was thinking as well. Have you ever drained your coolant? Chances are it could be stop leak. If it was that amount of rust you would be in trouble. Its either a coolant stop leak or a head gasket stop leak. Either way, a drain, flush, fill of the coolant is in order.
 
Well, last winter I was having almost zero heat, so I flushed out the heater core and used CLR ( In Canada it's some Calcium, Lime, Rust and crud remover with many uses )to remove the rust and crud in there, many people do it here and was recommended by many and it got a good flush out at the time, it could be possible there was still some left in the HC and it's now in the system cleaning as it goes !

I am the 3rd owner now for 3 years, it did it in the beginning, but not nearly as much.

I flushed out the rad, not a full system, in May and added new coolant. I read on this forum that the red coolant wasn't used on 4rnr's until a few years after '97 and that the green stuff was safe to use.

The PO never said it had any stop leak added, it's only really got like in the photo since the flushing I did this year. So if you guys are saying it looks like some kinda stop leak then it's very possible it is from the CLR I used !

I've had green stuff (prestone for aluminum) in mine for 100K, tested it the other day, still good and no rust anywhere. Might change it next year! :cowboy:
 
At least it used to be available here. Isn't that the product where they dip the silver in it to remove tarnish and clean tub faucets in the commercial?
 
Huh ok. I'd always heard that the metal in our engines was more 'sensitive' to the green. The red wasn't just a name brand; it actually has a different make-up that's safe for our engines.

Red and green antifreeze are different for sure. But I think people are splitting hairs in terms of one color being much better than the other. Red is newer and is probably better at whatever, but I think you run more risk than it's worth by switching coolants and potentially having residual antifreeze mix with your new stuff.

It's a long held belief that mixing red and green antifreeze will slime/sludge up the cooling system. Now I don't know how true that is, but for me, my truck came from the factory with green antifreeze in it and it still had green in it when I got it. So taking a risk ( albeit a small one ) of having an antifreeze mixing issue by switching to red antifreeze, which is maybe only marginally "better" — just wasn't worth any potential gain from red antifreeze IMHO.

But I'm no coolant expert so I could be pursauaded to use red if someone were to present some good info on why.
