Does Milage Matter?

I'm currently in the market for a 3rd and 4th gen. I've noticed a lot of the 3rd gens get up there in milage 300k+. This makes me a little more comfortable getting one that's creeping up on 200k. As far as 4th gens go, how much should I take milage into consideration? Would you guys go for a 200k mile truck as a daily driver? The interior and exteriors of the 4ths seem to hold up well, which is one reason I'm thinking it might make sense to save some money and get one with some hefty miles on it.

Any thoughts?

I would take service records as the number one priority. I personally wouldn't buy a truck with that many miles on it unless I could work on it myself and the saving money aspect gets thrown out the window if the truck is constantly in the shop. How much will you spend? Not how much do you want to spend because we all end up spending a bit more than we intend to anyway.

Anything in particular you're looking for in the records? Or just that there's regular maintenance being done?

I do about 85% of the work on my cars myself, but this will be a 3rd car for two people so I don't want to have to invest too much time into it. The other two are a prius and a 3 series bmw, so not much effort into the prius but quite a bit into the bimmer. Main reason for looking into a 4runner is my commute gets pretty sketchy in the winter with the rwd lowered bmw. Even with snow tires... Would also like to get into some tame off-roading every once in blue moon.

I realistically won't spend more than $8k out the door, but like you said I started out in the 5ish range. So I'd be much happier if I could get something for less than 7. Initially I was only looking at 3rd gens, but it seemed like if it was going to be a daily driver the 4th gen might make more sense.

Obviously I'm still in the early stages over here...

Yeah just regular maintenance but consistent. Belts, hoses, oils, rust, water pump etc... The fact that you do 85% of the work yourself solves 95% of the problem.
 
Bought an 05 v8 recently with 160k on it, had no problem with it since it had extensive records

previous owner (original from new) had all service records and everything was done at the local dealer. I mean everything...brakes done at all intervals, suspension has been replaced, all fluids regularly, plugs etc.

Sounds like a good deal... congrats! Liking the v8?
 
Thinking I'm going to go with a v8 with 170k. Still a little iffy on buying something with that many miles, but it has good service records, so....

What would be the most likely cause of a catastrophic failure at a higher mileage? Like is there something that is likely to happen eventually that'll make me call it a day and give up on it? Or is it just going to keep on keeping on as long as I throw maintenance at it?
 
I'm thinking the expensive Master Cylinder/ABS deal might at some point cause you to scrap the 4Runner. But that is only after around 250K miles where the cost / benefit kicks in. For me anyway.

Hmm, just heard about that. Is it sort of a given that the MC will need to be replaced?
 
It's a nasty surprise when it happens but I certainly don't know the frequency of occurance. There's some brake failure threads on here that describe it.

Some third parties are providing rebuilt units at huge savings, hope they are making good ones and keep it up. Individuals, small companies I don't know which. Certainly a long way from a catalog item.
 
Seems like a pretty strange problem to have... not sure I've really heard of it on other platforms. Almost makes me reconsider the whole thing...
