so, i see you can remove completely or not. so, i just wanted to see if its worth it to leave it in. i would like to inspect and clean mine up if its not a whole lot more trouble.

If you don't have a sway bar you can remove the passenger side rack mount and drop it out the bottom. Otherwise you will have to remove your swaybar also. It's a tight squeeze between the tranny dipstick tube and the frame but it's possible. I actually only had to remove the top bolt for the rack mount and it gave me that little bit of room that was needed. You might be able to get it out another way but I couldn't.

no dipstick, i have the r150f 5speed. maybe ill have enough clearance. sway bar aint no thang...i got pneumatics too.

I have read that pulling the starter on a 5-speed is relatively easy. (I have not had to do this, yet). We also have a smaller starter and one of the contacts is different--unless you have the cold-weather package.

I found the tranny lines were the worst thing in my way. I'm pretty sure I just loosened the dipstick tube and worked on it that way. After I replaced the contacts with the starter still in the truck, I turned the thing a certain way and it litteraly fell out real easy. I was able to clean it up and make sure I tightened the contacts better then slipped it back in. Wish I remember how I turned it, but it fit real easy in and out.

Anyone with the 5speed transmissions that have starter issues just Get new contacts. So easy. Took 30 min. Pulled whole starter out. All I had to do to clear sway bar was to disconnect the mounts on the frame. Left the links alone. with the sway bar hanging down, I had more than enough room.

Old contacts were less than paper thin.

i used a torque wrench while putting everything back together. you will be surprised how tight the starter bolts seem.

I'd like to know exactly what contacts you used. Yours should be the same as mine and I'd like to put some in my spares box. TIA.

I just did this in my automatic. Took a while but I did a whole bunch of unnecessary steps (2" body lift made it a lot easier). Hardest part is in fact removing the starter. I opted to just position it where I could get to the contacts, etc etc.. If I did it again, it would take no time at all. However, I hope to not do it again lol. By the way, I'm starting to see a pattern here. I've seen a lot about starters and starter contacts in the past couple weeks than I ever have. I think our starters are giving their last efforts and then the cold comes around and just kills it lol. Anyways, glad it's done and over with.

Cheers,
Waldz

Mine looked exactly the same.. Except my smaller contact wasn't as bad. I wire brushed it and stuck it back in.
