Dome light electrical issue?

I finally got around to finding and purchasing a dome light for my 4runner, and after installation, I was reminded that it was sporadic in the first place, and now with the LED it is just dim and crappy. Removed the dome light assembly, verified I was getting 12V out the plug, sanded the contacts, reinstall. The door switch works great! Nice and bright. However the 'on' position is either dim and flickers, or it just doesn't work. I had it set to 'on' when I put the assembly back in with the light, and it was bright until I put the rear screws back in. Now I cannot get it to light properly even without the screws.

Maybe RAD4Runner can depart some wisdom here!

For future reference since I had a hard time finding info, this bulb works great if you bend the contact tabs just a smidge:

The ground contact could be the issue. Did you use dielectric grease on your contacts and ground screws?
Also bear in mind that the wire that supply's that light is low amp. So it's not going to be super bright you could piggy back off a new supply line that has more amps I fixed mine with a LED because they draw less power so they are brighter. As for intermittent signal check all your grounds even the door switch ground can loose contact so clean that up too.

Hmm, I didn't actually think about cleaning the ground point. Let me clarify though, when the light is in 'door' mode, its bright and works perfectly.

The image above shows a metal strip where two screws make contact. When those screws made contact the light got dimmer.. I'll check the ground points in the morning.


And this is how bright the light is when it works in door mode:

which is plenty bright.

So it turns out that bit of ground strip was making erratic content with that metal behind it. Poor design IMHO, but I bent it out and cleaned up the screws, and BAM its excellent!

Yes, I always stress, Toyota components are bullet-proof. The problem is often on how they are installed, wired together. So clean, tight connections are always important.

No worries haha I hope you brought some to share.

I'll be doing my KS again with Toyoem parts, aside from the new wire I've ran, and if its still throwing codes, I might call upon the holy Rad!
